Enews February 2022

LCLN works with our local community to improve the long term sustainability of farming & the environment in west and central Gippsland
From all the Latrobe Catchment Landcare Network board and staff we wish you a Happy New Year and welcome you into 2022.

This year we have some new and exciting things on the Landcare agenda and as a Network we are super keen to work with each group and assist with project development.
Does your group have some great ideas but perhaps you don’t know where to start or how to fund it? These are the sorts of things that we can help you with.
Be sure to keep us in the loop or make contact with either Kelsey or myself to discuss group plans.

School Tree Day will be held on Friday July 29th this year and again we will be hosting small school groups in the Latrobe region that would like to be involved.
If tree planting is something that your school would like to assist with, please contact me to discuss group size and potential planting dates.  Please be aware that vacancies are limited and will be open to the first 6 schools to apply.

National Tree Day is Sunday 31st July and this is a great opportunity for Landcare groups to host a tree planting session or working bee and get your members back in the hands on environment.
If your group would like to host a planting session, please contact me ASAP as the Landcare Network has a limited number of trees available for group plantings and it will be first in first served.
Enjoy this amazing growing weather we are having. 😊

Regards

World Wetland Day
Happy World Wetland Day - 2nd of February 2022!

Wetlands are areas of land where water covers the soil – all year or just at certain times of the year. They include: freshwater and saline lakes, swamps and shallow waters in Victoria's estuaries, bays and inlets.

Wetlands protect our shores from wave action, reduce the impacts of floods, absorb pollutants and improve water quality. They provide habitat for animals and plants and many contain a wide diversity of life, supporting plants and animals that are found nowhere else. They are an important part of ecosystem services and provide immense beauty to the eye.
When your next out and about, take a walk along a wetland and see the diversity within these wonderful ecosystems!
Mountian Rivers at the Erica Country Expo
David and Mal from Mountain Rivers Landcare Group
On the 15th of January 2022, the Mountain Rivers Landcare Group attended the Erica Country Expo with help from the LCLN Landcare trailer. It was great to see the trailer getting some good use after a long time building dust from inactivity due to Covid-19. The group had a number of smiling visitors throughout the day, with much interest in Landcare and pamphlet taking. If you are interested in joining their group, check out the Landcare Gateway here: Mountain Rivers Landcare Group — Victorian Landcare Gateway (landcarevic.org.au) for contact details.

If you or your group are wanting to get some more exposure in your region, get in contact with us today to have a chat about using the Landcare trailer.
Kayaking the Macalister to Map Willows
Gippsland Intrepid Landcare, a youth based Landcare group (18-35 year-olds) is holding a Kayaking and Willow Mapping event along the lower half of the Macalister River on the 12th of February 2022.

This event is a great way for like-minded people to come together for a fun day full of adventure, helping to monitor willows for future management.

You can find out more information and buy tickets here: Willow Monitoring on the Macalister River | Facebook
Climate Futures for Dairy
A discussion about how farmers can successfully be engaged to plan their climate futures

When: Tuesday 8th of February 2022 at 12pm

What are the priorities for farmers in adapting for climate change?

What support might our farmers and farming communities be needing?

These key questions were answered recently in farmer driven workshops undertaken in North East Victoria. This ground up approach and the lessons learned are relevant to all industries and regions. Meet the project team as they share their insights, and then join us in a discussion about how farmers can successfully be engaged to plan their climate futures.

Strengthening Rural Communities
The Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC)
Round 12 is now open: Closes 5pm AEDT 22nd February 2022

The Strengthening Rural Communities (SRC) program aims to give the thousands of small rural, regional and remote communities across Australia an opportunity to access funding to support broad community needs.

Given the events of summer 2019/20, it has also been expanded to offer funding to support recovery in bushfire-affected communities.

Grants are available for a broad range of grassroots, community-led initiatives that directly and clearly benefit local communities. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis and assessed quarterly.

This round, grants up to $10,000 are available through the Small & Vital Stream, and grants up to $25,000 are available through the Bushfire Recovery Stream.

NAIDOC Local Grants Program
Community Grants and Sponsorship

Opens: 17th Jan 2022 - Closes: 22nd Feb 2022
The Australian Government is inviting applications for funding through an open process in 2021-22 for the 2022 NAIDOC Local Grants Round, delivered under Program 1.4 – Culture and Capability of the Indigenous Advancement Strategy (IAS).

This grant round provides funding to Indigenous and non Indigenous organisations to contribute to the costs of local and regional NAIDOC activities across Australia. NAIDOC activities should align with the 2022 theme ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’.

The objectives of the program are to promote:

  • the expression, engagement and conservation of Indigenous Australians’ cultures
  • Indigenous Australians’ participation in the social and economic life of Australia through healing, and strengthening the capability, governance and leadership of Indigenous Australians, organisations and communities,
  • broader understanding and acceptance of the unique place of Indigenous Australians’ cultures in Australian society.

The intended outcomes of the program are to:

  • contribute to the maintenance and strengthening of Indigenous Australians’ cultural expression and conservation, including recognition of Australia’s shared history and valuable Indigenous Australian heritage
  • support activities that increase the participation of Indigenous Australians in Australian society through healing and improved individual, community and organisational capability and leadership,
  • promote the unique place Indigenous Australians and their cultures have in Australian society.
