Hi <<First Name>>—

WordCamp Phoenix & Cloudfest

WordCamp Phoenix starts today and I've heard from several friends, including Michelle Frechette, who are attending. It was always one of my favorites.

And it looks like WordPress was a big theme at Cloudfest this week, which is great for the industry-community, with a lot of Post Status members in Germany. We attended last year, and it was a great setting with great people.

Letting Go

Part of my personal work has been focused on acceptance and letting go. Whew, now that's real work!

My dear friend and colleague for 10 years Kristen Wright, who now works at Automattic on their amazing Day One team, shared this quote with me today:

Whatever pain you can’t get rid of … make it your creative offering.

My takeaway: Instead of directing our energy outward, turn and use it inward, for our highest and best contribution ... back out. Not at all easy to do in the moment, but something I keep practicing.

Another Success for Cloudfest

Cloudfest is not a WordPress event, but, like the web, it seems like at least 43% of the attendees were WordPress community members. Looking at attendee twitter activity, the hackathon, speaker sessions, panel discussions - and parties - were very engaging and successful.

It’s Not About Luck

“If you’re going to tell me about all the good luck I’ve had to get to where I am, then are you also going to talk about the bad luck I had to overcome to get here?”

~Michelle Frechette to Allie Nimmons on the Underrepresented in Tech podcast

A few weeks ago on an episode of the Underrepresented in Tech podcast, Allie Nimmons and I talked about the hard work that goes into being able to do some of the things we have done (speak at WordCamp Asia, for example).

It’s always been interesting to me how people see me speak at a WordCamp and say “you’re so lucky you get to do that.” Privilege aside (and I do acknowledge my privilege), luck had very little to do with me getting to where I am. Or for any accomplishment of any other person in our community. Indeed, there has been a lot of hard work, participation, and drive to do things like podcasting, speaking, and to have the roles that each of us in the community has.

So today I’m acknowledging all of your hard work and efforts to be where you are and have achieved what you have achieved. I know it wasn’t luck. I see your struggles. I see how you’ve earned your success. And I know what it takes to get to where you are – and where you’re going.
