QUICK UPDATES
Prek registration is still going on. Parents of 3 year olds who do not qualify for UPK (Universal Preschool) will start a new registration from the district. We will let you know as soon as they give us the link. Otherwise, you can check the district website through the preschool page. Preschool site
Overdue lunch payment slips will be coming home in the next week. If you've been paying on your myschoolbucks account, you should be able to see your balances.
Conference sign ups will be available on February 24th. Please check your emails for the link on the 24th.

TALENT SHOW SIGN UP
The 2nd Annual Highlands Talent Show is scheduled for Friday, April 14th at 6:30. The Talent Show is open to students in grades K-5. Students may only be in 1 act and the act should be 3 minutes or less in length. There are only going to be 35 acts in the show, so sign up quickly! If your child is part of a group act, please choose 1 family to fill out the form. Be prepared to list the names and parent emails of the other children in the act. There will be a virtual Show Off in February, a Non Dress Rehearsal on your choice of March 8th or 14th after school and a mandatory Dress Rehearsal after school on April 13th. The Tribute to Teachers awards program, sponsored by St. Vrain Valley Schools Education Foundation, provides the opportunity for students, parents, volunteers, fellow educators, school staff and community members to recognize and honor individual teachers at the Pre-K – 12th grade levels in St. Vrain Valley Schools who exemplify excellence in teaching. By paying tribute to teachers who have an extraordinary impact on the achievements of students, the Education Foundation and the community hope to honor the accomplishments of all teachers.
Nomination Criteria
Exemplary St. Vrain Valley Schools Teachers of the Year embody the following 5 characteristics:
- Innovator – Frequently and appropriately challenges “accepted but outdated” methodologies with new approaches
- Goal-Setter – Sets and maintains high standards for learning regardless of class/student knowledge
- Motivator – Demonstrates a real love of teaching in most every lesson
- Subject Matter Expert – Understands and conveys the material taught
- Life Connector – Utilizes real-world examples/current topics in the classroom to emphasize the lesson’s importance
In order to qualify as a nominee, the teacher must be a licensed educator in the State of Colorado and employed at a St. Vrain Valley Schools campus for the current school year. If a teacher won the Teacher of the Year honor for their school the previous year they are not eligible. Click Here to see the 2022 winners. All St. Vrain Valley Schools are eligible for these awards! All nominations must be received electronically no later than Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at 11:45pm.
Awards
One teacher from each St. Vrain Valley School will receive the Teacher of the Year recognition for their school. Two other teachers from each school will be honored as Teacher of the Year finalists. The Teacher of the Year for each school will receive a financial gift. The recipients and finalists all receive a certificate of recognition during the Tribute to Teachers event on April 29, 2023. From the school Teacher of the Year honorees, a district wide Teacher of the Year and four finalists will be chosen. |

We’re back with a drawing this January for Diversity Reads: Cultural Holidays part 2!
Email us at info@highlandshawkspto.com (subject Diversity Reads) with your student’s first name, last initial and teacher or find Highlands Elementary PTO on Facebook and comment on our posts. This month we will be giving away ‘Lil Rabbit’s Kwanzaa by Donna L. Washington and Playing With Lanterns by Wang Yage. If you entered your name in December we will automatically roll over your entry for our January drawing. Last day to enter is January 27th. (If you have already won a book with our Diversity Reads program, we hope you continue to enjoy our monthly booklists, but kindly ask that you don’t enter the drawings to make space for other student winners.)

Before & After School Care
St. Vrain’s Community Schools program provides a safe, structured and positive environment that extends school day learning and supports families in need of before- and after-school care. The program provides a balanced menu of educational, enrichment and recreational activities to promote student achievement and engagement. Our childcare program is licensed through the Colorado Department of Human Services for children ages 5-11.
