Techniques for FIT

  • Make a list of all the tasks in your head, then mark them as either Musts or Wants. Do the musts, prioritize the wants. (Musts are mandatory, wants are secondary)
  • Reward yourself when you get it done. Any reward. A hot tub soak, a new pair of socks, whatever. 
  • Set destination goals that don't have time component. Break the goal into steps that can be completed in a day or a week. Let the freedom of no time limit work for you 
  • Set time based goals. Unlike destination goals, start at the drop-dead date and work backwards, dividing the tasks into days and week time periods. 
  • Bonus technique: Prioritize family and partners. They should be at the top of your lists and usually take the least time to complete. 

Being Human - Being present

Don't book back to back meetings. 


Get more done by doing less. Speed up by slowing down. 

Nice sayings, but how do you put them in practice? 

Start by not booking back to back meetings. It's only human that you're going to be half present in both. 

This morning at 10:20am, I peeked inside the conference room where my meeting is taking place. My co-participant looks up and smiles my way, making everyone turn to see who is at the door. I smile back and my client gives me the "5 minute" signal. 

From where I wait, I can see a few people start to pack up. Check out. When I enter the room, a lingering co-worker is trying to make one last point to my client. After he leaves and the door is closed, I move to start the meeting but my client puts me on hold while she tries to recall meeting details and makes notes into her iPad.

She's incredibly effective, but today admitted that yes, she was half-present in both meetings. Not just because she had back-to-back-to-back-to-back meetings today, but because her mind was also dealing with issues leftover from the holiday. 

Not booking back to back meetings is a simple concept, but not easy to do.  

Treat it like one of the mantra's above. A guideline more than a directive. Next time you're sent a meeting request, schedule thirty minutes before and thirty minutes after to simply think about the meeting. 

Be there. 

Random Stuff

My extended family has a healthy 50/50 split on political views. Usually, there's no easy way to classify who is for or against what, but this year there was a definite age difference in supporters of Trump and Clinton.

As the holidays smash us into tight spaces to share food, the political chit-chat has been absent.

Until it wasn't.

Listening to the two sides toss out logical fallacies is entertaining at best, cringe inducing at worst. At one point in the random old person/young person fact fight, one voice spoke up above the rest. 

"I think it was Jefferson who said, and I'm paraphrasing, 'Each generation is independent of the one that came before it, and will have its own majority and it's own right to form the government that promotes its happiness.'"

Everyone pauses, sits back in their chairs, and lets the thought wash over them. It's time to leave the restaurant and a few of us start gathering up our coats.

A voice comes from the end of the table, "Yeah, but there are two kinds of people. . ."
