Techniques for FIT

  • Stop with the, "I'll be happy when. . ." Get happy now.
  • I can't change the past, but I have a shot at the future. Same with you, so say "I'm sorry," and move on.
  • If you focus on what others are doing, you miss the opportunity to be your best self.
  • An old opponent of Bjorn Borg was quoted as saying, "We're playing great tennis, but he's doing something else."

Being Human - 95

At the time I write this, I have two clients dealing with what I'll call a crossroads. A time in their life where they feel like a critical decision needs to be made that will set the course for the rest of their lives.

Heavy stuff.

As it happens, I was in the audience of a Marshall Goldsmith presentation, yesterday. If you're not familiar with Mr. Goldsmith, he was coaching senior executives long before there was a formal coaching industry. Quite the character.

In response to a question, he tossed out one of his little pieces of advice, perfect for what was in my head. The teacher appears when the pupil is ready, eh?

Goldsmith suggests that we close our eyes and imagine ourselves at 95. Still healthy, very happy, and filled with the wisdom of a life well lived. Do you have that in mind?

Now, that 95 year old you gets to travel back to sit with the you of today for a few minutes. Future you can impart one piece of advice - what is it? What is the one thing 95 year old you tells the person you are today?

Great exercise.

Random Stuff

New site

I have a new website about to launch. As part of that, I had some professional photographs taken and, well, I was thrilled. I texted thumbnails to my family a few weeks ago.

I picked the first one to be featured on my home page. Like picking the perfect greeting card, I imagined people thinking, "I need to hire that thoughtful, creative, handsome man."

As I worked on the site over the weekend, my twenty year old son walked up behind me and burst out laughing. "You're really going to use that picture?" I turned to glare at him.

He just shrugged his shoulders, "Oh, when you sent that to us, I thought it was a joke."

Ego, splat.
