The Past in Print!
HFFI has teamed with the Central Rappahannock Heritage Center to publish our newest Rappahannock Series offering: The Circle Unbroken: Civil War Letters of the Knox Family of Fredericksburg.
In 2011, dozens of letters written by members of the Knox family during the Civil War, all amazingly preserved for the past 150 years, were donated to the Heritage Center. The Center’s staff then began the monumental task of painstakingly researching and transcribing the letters, while HFFI assisted with layout, editing, and cartography for the new publication.
Written both from the Knox home on Princess Anne Street (now the Kenmore Inn) and from the battlefield, the letters reveal astounding details about wartime Fredericksburg and the experiences of its residents during the tumultuous period between 1861 and 1865.
The resulting volume is a time capsule offering an ordinary family’s unique perspective on one of the most dramatic chapters in our city’s and our nation’s history. The book’s release is scheduled for this October during a launch event hosted by the Kenmore Inn. Stay tuned for details!
Curious Compass
Coming soon! HFFI has been working with Curious Compass, a technology and app creation company, to develop an interactive and educational tool designed to help kids, as well as adults, experience and learn about Fredericksburg’s rich and storied past. Curious Compass has already produced a unique tour app that offers the chance to walk in the shoes of a Civil War soldier and make decisions that help shape the story as you go.
The company’s newest offering, the Historic Route 1 App, is due out this fall. Developed in cooperation with HFFI, this guided tour celebrates the city’s 20th-century past, allowing users to experience downtown Fredericksburg as it was in 1955. The app will be available through iTunes for download to your iPhone or iPad.
Stay tuned for more information, or keep an eye on our Facebook Page for release updates.

HFFI Photo Archive
Work has begun on the HFFI photo archive overhaul. HFFI’s archives document a wide range of people, places, and events from Fredericksburg’s 19th and 20th century past. Volunteers have begun sorting through photographs and removing them from the now outdated and possibly damaging sleeves. Next, they will be placed in up-to-date archival sleeves after scanning and uploading them to our new online database.
Unfortunately, we don’t have enough sleeves to keep all of our photos safe. If you would like to donate to HFFI in support of our updated archive, please click here to do so through PayPal or send a check to HFFI, 1200 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg, VA 22401. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, so your donations are tax deductible!
We thank you for helping us keep this wonderful resource safe!
