This month we would like to highlight our generous sponsor, Pro Players Live.

Pro Players Live is a new and innovative way for student athletes to train, track, and share their progress and successes.   Using the features on the Pro Players Live website athletes can showcase their skills and statistics to friends, family, and college recruiters.

Pro Training Videos can also be accessed immediately online and then stored for future training sessions.

Preservation in the 'Burg

Dear members and friends of HFFI,

We hope you’re enjoying your summer, whether spending it here at home or perhaps traveling, visiting friends or family.  If you’ve been traveling, then maybe you’ve had the chance to visit other historic locales and see how our town’s unique charms and historic sites compare.

Remember, the key to preserving a town’s history and historic places is strong community support.  Volunteering your time and skills, attending special events, and contributing financially to nonprofit groups such as HFFI are all vitally important.

The Historic Fredericksburg Foundation, Inc., has been working diligently and successfully to preserve our city’s past since 1955.  In today’s fast-paced world however, the challenge of continuing that mission, especially with a small staff and limited resources, grows ever more complex. That’s why your contributions and support have never been more important.   Please consider donating a few hours of your time or a few dollars from your pocket to help HFFI preserve this special community for future generations.  Together we can keep history alive!

Please contact HFFI at office@hffi.org or 540-371-4504 if you are interested in getting involved.

Preservation Updates

The results of last month’s city meetings are as follows:

Architectural Review Board (ARB)—A vote on the demolition of 609 Sophia Street was tabled until further research on the building and its history is completed and more information on the project can be provided.

City Council Meeting—Following a public hearing and much discussion, the Council voted to overturn the ARB’s denial of a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) for the owners of 314 William Street.

Planning Commission Meeting—The Commission approved each of the special use and special exception permits requested for the One Hanover condominium project, and passed its recommendation on to City Council, which considered the matter during its July 9th meeting. After hearing public comments, the Council opted to delay its vote until August to allow more time for information gathering and discussion.  Do you have any thoughts on this topic?  Contact your local Council Member and let them be heard!

Vintage Route 1 Event

Have you seen the latest issue of the Rappahannock Cooperative Living magazine?  HFFI’s Vintage Route 1 Tour and Downtown Community Day event, taking place on Saturday, September 7, 2013, was featured in its “On the Road” series!  Author Deborah Huso takes readers on a trip down memory lane, highlighting some of Route 1’s many charms and unique historic places (such as Carl’s Frozen Ice Cream), and celebrating Fredericksburg rich 20th century past.   Read the full article here.

Our Vintage Route 1 Event is a celebration of Fredericksburg’s 20th century history and the historic east coast highway that, for a time, came right through our town.  The southwest may have Route 66—but we have Route 1!

Tickets for the Streetcar Tour of Lafayette Boulevard and Walking Tour of Princess Anne Street are now on sale at the Lewis Store and the Visitors Center.  Members of HFFI receive a discount, so be sure your membership is current!  Be sure to keep an eye on our website www.VintageRoute1.com and our Facebook page for the latest information.

Have a story or photograph of mid-20th century Fredericksburg you’d like to share?  Please contact us at route1@hffi.org.

HFFI Needs You!

Have a few hours to spare for HFFI?  We’re currently looking for volunteers to help out on the third Saturdays of each month, when we open our doors to the public to show them what HFFI and the Lewis Store have to offer.

Like to talk to people?  We’ll train you to be a Lewis Store docent.  Prefer to work solo?  We have tasks for you too!  Please contact us at office@hffi.org or 540-371-4504 if you would like more information.

First Friday in July

On July 5th, HFFI hosted a First Friday Open House showcasing a collection of images from photographer Julie Desiderio.  Visitors to the exhibit enjoyed the beautiful display and commented on the unique and inspiring depictions of Fredericksburg’s many hidden charms.

Ms. Desiderio is donating 10% of all sales to HFFI, so stop by today and take a look!
