Moving Forward with Team;
Enhancing the Vision!

August 2013

Message from the Superintendent

HOW QUICKLY TIME FLIES when having a great time!  It seems like yesterday when students and employees said farewell to the 2012-2013 school year.  Our students, educators, and support personnel are rejuvenated from a well-deserved summer vacation filled with  recreational activities.  On August 9, students, educators, and support personnel  are returning to the school setting to embrace the challenges of the 2013-2014 school year.  I  hope my enthusiasm, energy, and desire for educational excellence will be shared by everyone as we move forward enhancing the vision within the St. Martin Parish School System.  We remain committed to implementing quality educational practices to ensure successful student outcomes and professional learning for our professional and support employees.  It is our belief that our school system should be second to none in the region, state, and nation.  I am a firm believer that attitude, commitment, and determination are quality traits that will enable us to attain the aforementioned  vision.
I want to encourage a partnership among education stakeholders--our employees, students, parents, and  the business community. We need to work as a team to ensure increased academic success. Our focus will be enhancing communication and collaboration, establishing rigor within the curriculum, providing professional learning for our employees, working towards the attainment of the 8 goals established by State Superintendent John White and the LA Department of Education Staff, and establishing a climate and culture of high expectations.  This focus will be attained through a team approach.
In closing, everyone wants to be part of a winning team. Those who  desire and are  committed to achieving success generally achieve it!  Moving forward, I hope your school year is filled with great success!  Best wishes for a productive school year!
  •  Mr. William "Billy" Greig was appointed to serve as Interim Director of Curriculum and Instruction and Mrs. Laura Turpeau as Interim Supervisor of Secondary Education during the Fall, 2013 semester.
  •  The Board approved a request to piggyback a bid for fuel with the East Baton Rouge School System.
  • The Board approved a request for permission to call for bids for replacement steamers in the Food Services Department.
  • The Board approved an extension for existing camp leases for Ervin "T-Man" Bailey and Randall and Linda Firmin.
  • The Board also approved the continuation of the  District Attorney's Early Intervention Program and Truancy Assessment Service Center.
  • In other business, change orders were also approved regarding site mechanical and electrical work at Breaux Bridge Jr. High.
  • The low bids offered by Calcasieu Mechanical ($33,000) for  Breaux Bridge High AHU#2 and Moses Jackson for the  Old Instructional Center Abatement and Demolition project were approved.
  • Other business included a presentation by a representative from the  Department of Costal Restoration pertaining to the servitude on all section 16 land owned by the St. Martin Parish School Board in lower St. Martin.
  • There was also a discussion item offered by Mr. Richard Poiter regarding salary supplements for support personnel.  Mr. Potier's proposal was to fund salary supplements from the 2.75% increase approved by the Legislature in June.  As you are aware, school systems across Louisiana have not received the 2.75% during the last five years.  Miraculously, the  Legislature, during its 2013 session and the final hours, reinstated the 2.75% funding to districts.  Consequently, the St. Martin Parish School System is expected to receive approximately $700,000 from the 2.75% funding.  $350,000 has been designated as a supplement for certificated personnel and is a mandate from the LA Legislature.  The legislature did not specify the use of the other $350,000.  These funds may be used at the Board's discretion. This item was for discussion only.
