St. Martin Parish Schools

Moving Forward with Team;
Enhancing the Vision!

JUNE 2013

Message from the Superintendent

As new challenges are presented through education reform initiatives, the St. Martin Parish Public School System is committed to the attainment of educational excellence.  We will continue our mission to provide quality educational experiences, while utilizing a TEAM approach with all stakeholders focused on success.

There have been several changes in administration resulting from employees retiring from the school district.  While bidding farewell and best wishes to school administrators, educators, and school employees who are retiring after many years of service, I want to thank them on behalf of the St. Martin Parish School Board, school employees, parents, students and other education stakeholders.  I want to personally thank them for their years of dedication, commitment, and service to the St. Martin Parish School System.  I also welcome our new administrators, educators, and support personnel and look forward to the leadership each brings to their respective positions.

Welcome to the first edition of the St. Martin Parish eNewsletter. I strongly believe effective communication is essential to building strong relationships and partnerships within the education community.  Therefore, I invite you to access this monthly e-newsletter to find out relevant information that will keep you abreast of the exciting things that are happening within the school system.  A special thank you to Mrs. Redell Louis, Technology Supervisor, for designing and maintaining the e-newsletter.

  • Plaques were presented to approximately 53 employees who are retiring with years totaling 1,752 years.  The employees retired from various positions including Superintendent, Chief Financial Officer, Director of Administration and Operations, Supervisor, Accountant, Coordinator, Maintenance, Bus Operator, Clerical, Teacher, and Teacher Aide.
  • Two employees were recognized posthumously.  Ms. Mary Filer, a St. Martinville  High School Teacher Aide, was employed for 34.5 years.  Mrs. Sylvia Green, Breaux Bridge Elementary School Secretary, had 34 years of work experience with the St. Martin Parish School System.   Our heartfelt condolences and appreciation are extended to the families and friends of both Ms. Filer and Mrs. Green.
  • Other action taken at the Board meeting was the presentation of school board scholarships to Danitra Alexander of Cecilia High School, and Haley Newsome of Breaux Bridge High School.  Danitra is the daughter of Ms. Tracie Tolliver Borel.  Haley is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel (Violet) Patin of Breaux Bridge.  Both are 2013 graduates and will be pursuing a degree in education. Congratulations and best wishes to these young ladies, as they pursue their education credentials.
  • Finance Committee Proposals were approved with the exception of the Stephensville Elementary proposal, recommending a Reduction in Staff and a proposal that would increase the student: teacher ratio for all schools within the district.  Action on the latter items was delayed and will be addressed at the July 10, 2013 school board meeting.
  • The Board voted to approve a Statement of Work with Pearson Connections Learning to address virtual learning in grades 1-6.  Please stay tuned as more information will be provided on this Choice opportunity.  The expansion of virtual learning is an attempt to address the needs of home school students who wish to avail themselves to the services provided by the school system.  It is important to note there is no cost to the students who enroll in this program.  The cost is absorbed by the St. Martin Parish School System.  Interested individuals are encouraged to contact Mrs. Kellie Leblanc at or call 337.394.6261 for further information.
