Moving Forward with Team;
Enhancing the Vision!

Message from the Superintendent

 "As human beings, our job in life is to help people realize how rare and valuable each one of us really is, that each of us has something that no one else has-or ever will have--something that is unique to all time. It's our job to encourage each other to discover that uniqueness and to provide ways of developing its expression."  `Fred Rogers (1928-2003) Television personality and parenting specialist
As we begin our journey into the 2015-2016 school year, it is important to note that we will likely encounter challenges along the way.  Challenges are a part of life.  Once we accept this fact, we can proceed knowing that our attitudes are critical to successful outcomes.  For example, prior to the opening of school, there have been challenges. Just as we thought we were set for the opening of school, a report was forwarded to me that Breaux Bridge High School would require a new air handler/blower.  While this definitely was of major concern, particularly, with the most recent sweltering temperatures, the Operations/Maintenance Team assisted by Poche', Pruett, and Associates, LLC quickly defined an action plan to order an air handler which is expected to arrive within 45 days. Portable air conditioners have been ordered to be temporarily installed to “carry” us over during the next month or two. Once the air handler equipment arrives, there is a concern for installation. An emergency board meeting was called on Friday, July 31st and the board approved the expenditure which is estimated to be somewhere around $50,000.
This is one example of the many challenges that occurred during the summer months which leads me to say that attitudes are critical to successful outcomes.  I must applaud the leadership of many within the school system for working together as a team to ensure that our students are provided environments conducive to learning through the numerous renovation projects occurring within the District.  Additionally, there were changes to administrative teams at the following schools:  Cheryl Mitchell, JCEP, Assistant Principal; Eileen Rowe, Parks Middle, Assistant Principal; Shirley Thibodeaux, Breaux Bridge High, Assistant Principal; Tiedra Hawkins, Cecilia Jr. High, Assistant Principal; Jill Bozeman, St. Martinville Primary, Assistant Principal; Tashanna Hypolite, Breaux Bridge Primary, Assistant Principal; and Lisa Thibodeaux, Breaux Bridge Elementary, Assistant Principal.
Others who were newly appointed and mentioned in the July edition were as follows: Kevin Bonhomme, Breaux Bridge Jr. High, Assistant Principal; John Chevalier, Cecilia High, Assistant Principal; and Tiffany Francis, Cecilia Primary, Assistant Principal. Congratulations and best wishes for a successful tenure are again extended ! Mrs. Phyllis Landry was appointed to the position of Elementary Supervisor/Accountability that was vacated by Mrs. Bonnie Thibodeaux.  On Friday, July 31, 2015, I learned that Mrs. Leah Hebert, Supervisor of Special Education, is retiring from the St. Martin Parish School System with more than twenty years of service. I appreciate Mrs. Hebert’s dedication, professionalism, and commitment to the St. Martin Parish School System. (Advertising for this position will begin immediately and the board will be asked to ratify at a later scheduled board meeting.)
In closing, I will reiterate the importance of possessing positive attitudes.  Instead of complaining about those things that we have little to no control, I suggest we focus on the encouraging words of Fred Rogers; he stated we should be willing to help people--our students, parents, educators, and team members-- realize how rare and valuable each one of us really is…it is our job to encourage each other…” as we move forward on our journey to a successful school year!  Each of us brings a distinct quality or attribute to the workplace.  I value each of you and encourage you to maintain the District’s shared vision: to improve education through sound educational practices that enhance teaching and learning and to provide educational opportunities for all stakeholders in an effort to make the St. Martin Parish School District second to none in the region, state, and nation.

Ms. Dawn Richard, Pupil Appraisal Coordinator for Special Services, is the recipient of the July, 2015 Employee of the Month Award.  She was nominated by her supervisors, Bridget Bergeron, Mike Hebert, and Leah Hebert, for her coordination, organizational skills, and the positivity she exudes to the Special Services Staff.
Welcome Back to our students, educators, school employees and parents! I want to welcome our teachers who are new to the St. Martin Parish School System. With the teacher attrition concerns facing our state and nation, I recognize our educators could choose to work in any school system; however, their choice is to work in the St. Martin Parish School System. Thanks to each for choosing the St. Martin Parish School System.

 Back to School Orientation

On July 27th, The Honorable Judge Lori Landry and Assistant District Attorney, Thialund Porter-Green, presented valuable information regarding the role and responsibilities of the court, when addressing behavioral concerns to St. Martin Parish School Board administrative and supervisory staff.

There was a Back to School Prayer Service held on July 28th.  The event was held at Veterans' Park, 200 Berard Street, Breaux Bridge. Father Joe Campion, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, opened the ceremony with a prayer.  Dr. Lottie Beebe, St. Martin Parish Superintendent of Schools, introduced Mr. Al Carter, Lafourche Parish educator, who offered prayers on behalf of students and the education community as they begin their journey into a new school year.  Clergy from the area were invited. Elected officials also attended including Mayor Ricky Calais, Senator Fred Mills, Becky Patin, Clerk of Court, the Honorable Judge Lori Landry, Burton Dupuis, Russell Foti, school board members, and Mike Fuselier, St. Martinville City Council.  Community leaders, parents, students, and educators also attended this event.

Teachers returned to work on August 4, 2015 to a day filled with professional development.  The day began at Cecilia High School where 600 plus educators joined to hear motivational speaker, Mr. Tom Cody, co-founder of Top 20 Training, who provided strategies for helping develop the potential of students and enhance classroom and school culture.  Teachers learned self-reflection strategies designed to improve their relationships with students, parents, and other colleagues, resulting in more effective and enjoyable work experiences.

The afternoon professional development sessions required teachers and administrators to move to different schools in the Cecilia area.  PreK teachers gathered at Cecilia Primary and received training on integrating technology into classroom instruction using Promethean tables.  Kindergarten through fifth grade teachers and administrators convened at Teche Elementary, while sixth through eighth grade convened at Cecilia Junior High, to received training on Writing across the Curriculum.  Parish teachers presented activities using strategies to enhance writing in all content areas.  Teachers from all three high schools assembled at Cecilia High School and worked with high school administrators in collaborative groups to compare, share, and develop curricular activities and strategies for improving teaching and learning in all content areas.

Tiedra Hawkins has been employed by the Saint Martin Parish school system for the past seven years. Previously, Ms. Hawkins taught in another parish as a first grade teacher. While working in Saint Martin Parish, Ms. Hawkins has served as a fourth and fifth grade teacher and most recently she has served as behavior interventionist at Breaux Bridge Elementary School. After conferring a master's degree in Educational Leadership and Administration and Supervision, she has moved into the role of assistant principal at Cecilia Junior High School. Ms. Hawkins is looking forward to working in this position and she is dedicated to continuing her professional career in Saint Martin Parish.

Tiffany Francis is married to Cashin Demouchet. They have 2 sons, Brian (22), Caleb (19), and one daughter Chelsea (14).  Mrs. Francis has been in education for 12 years as a Pre-K, Kindergarten and First grade teacher at ELC and Breaux Bridge Primary. She has also served as Curriculum Coordinator at Breaux Bridge Primary. Mrs. Francis is very excited to be the assistant principal at Cecilia Primary. She is honored to have the opportunity to work with Mrs. LeBoeuf and staff to increase student achievement at Cecilia Primary!
Two more assistant principals will be featured in the September edition.
