Message from the Superintendent

The week of April 7-11 will be quite busy for many teachers who will administer iLEAP and LEAP.  As stated in last month’s newsletter, we have sown the seeds of knowledge and are preparing for the harvest.  I recognize the curricula challenges embraced by our educators this year. I am truly appreciative of the efforts and desire of our educators to provide quality instruction to our students.  I am equally proud of our hard working students who strive for educational excellence.  It is our hope that successful outcomes will be prevalent within the district. 
All students in grades 3 through 8 will be taking one of the state required assessments -- iLEAP, LEAP, or LAA-2.  Please be aware of the following information provided by Mrs. Bonnie Thibodeaux.  She has provided letters to parents indicating the policies relative to student assessment outcomes. 
             The Louisiana Department of Education’s Promotion and Accountability policy states students must complete the state assessment, meet district compulsory attendance requirements, and achieve district academic requirements in order to be promoted.  The attendance requirements apply to all students in the district.  However, the state assessment and academic requirements will vary depending on the child’s grade level.  You may refer to St. Martin Parish’s Pupil Progression Plan on our parish website for the complete details of each of these policies for each grade level. 
            For promotional purposes, students in grades 4 and 8 are required by the state to meet the Basic /Approaching Basic Combination in ELA and Math. Students must also adhere to attendance and academic requirements set forth in the St. Martin Parish Pupil Progression Plan.  Students who fail to meet the Basic / Approaching Basic Combination MUST attend LEAP Remediation Summer School and retest in order to be eligible for a promotional waiver to the next grade.  
           The faculty and staff at each parish school have worked extremely hard all year to prepare our students for the exams.  In order to ensure successful assessment outcomes, Mrs. Thibodeaux has provided the following test-taking strategies for parents to utilize:
  • Have your child go to bed early and get a good night sleep.  This may include limiting the use of the phone, TV, music, etc.
  • Ensure your child eats a well-balanced breakfast to provide energy and alertness.
  • Ensure your child attends school daily and on time.
  • Avoid scheduling appointments for your child during school hours.
  • Maintain a peaceful environment at home and on the way to school to avoid adding additional stress to your child.
  •  Encourage your child to complete all items on the test with 100% effort.

In closing, I hope you enjoy your Spring break which is scheduled during the week of April 18-25th.  Offices will be open on April 22, 23, and 24th from 8:00 A.M. through  3:30 P.M. 
BOARD UPDATE

EDUCATION UPDATES

The Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) will meet on Tuesday, April 15th and Wednesday, April 16th.  A summary will be provided in the May edition of the electronic newsletter.  
Congratulations to William “Billy” Greig for his nomination and selection as the March Employee of the Month. Mr. Greig is currently serving as the Interim Director of Curriculum and Instruction and has done an exemplary job.  He was nominated by Mr. Al Blanchard, Director of Human Capital and Operations.   Mr. Greig was acknowledged during the April 2, 2014 School Board Meeting.  ScriptsCare is the sponsor of the St. Martin Parish Employee of the Month Program.   
 
 

A celebration was held on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 to highlight the St. Martin Parish Early Childhood Network and honor the early childhood educators as we embark on the journey to implement Act 3, the Early Childhood Education Act. There were approximately 100 people in attendance, including St. Martin Parish school board members, Central office staff, early childhood educators, business leaders, community agencies, media representatives and government officials.  The evening’s festivities included refreshments, socializing, a pledge drive, a silent auction, and raffle drawing.

The community supporters in attendance were able to show their support in three different ways.   Read more.  

Office of Human Capital and Operations

Personnel from the Office of Human Capital have been collecting enrollment numbers from all schools in the parish in order to determine our staffing needs for the 2014-2015 needs. In addition to this, we have also been reviewing retirement numbers and the responses to the Letters of Intent.  During the week of March 30, 2014 through April 4, 2014, staff members were at job fairs at UL Lafayette, Northwestern University, LSU and McNeese State University.  We interviewed many excellent candidates whose résumés were forwarded to the schools for their review.  We will be hosting our own job fair at Breaux Bridge Primary on April 28, 2014 from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., with a recognition ceremony for our Partners in Education from 4:00 P.M.. to 5:00 P.M.  Please remind any certified teachers interested in employment to attend our St. Martin Parish job fair.

 

PARKS MIDDLE SCHOOL

Thank you to the American Legion Post 289 for donating the American Flag flying in front of school!  On February 23, the members of Post 289 came to school and taught the students about the history of the flag and proper protocol when handling and disposing of the flag. 
 

 

ST. MARTINVILLE SENIOR HIGH

St. Martinville Senior High School recently successfully completed the AdvancEd accreditation process. SMSH faculty, staff, and stakeholders prepared for over a year for the external review team visit that occurred on March 25 and 26. The review team gave the school exemplary marks and congratulated the school and all stakeholders on the work the school has done!

Story Hour

Mr. Jimmy Blanchard, St. Martin Parish School Board, volunteered to read to students at BBP for Principal / Business Partner Story Hour.  Each month students are selected for this special activity based on academic performance, exceptional behavior, or overall improvement.  Pictured is Mr. Blanchard, Ms. Sharma Zeringue, the event coordinator for the month of February, and BBP Pre-K and Kindergarten students.
