Summer Programs Provided Students with Future Career Opportunities
The St. Martin Parish School System provided students the opportunity to experience fields that they are interested in for their future.
AHEC
The AHEC (Area Health Education Center) Program was provided for students who have an interest in the medical field. Seven students from our three high schools were accepted into the two week program. They had to complete 90 hours of work. The students went to St. Agnes Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Heart of Hospice, and Lafayette General Hospital. St. Martin Hospital hosted the program. Ms. Tyranny Taylor, sponsor, teaches at St. Martinville High. Participating students, Lyndsy Callier, Tayler Gary, Amy Ho (BBHS); Heather Constatine, Dasha Noel, Kazi Rahman (CHS); and Samantha Zeno (SMSH) earned a ½ credit for completing the program.
Welding
Students interested in welding were given the opportunity to attend a two week extended welding program at St. Martinville High. Mr. Johnny Leday was the instructor. Lawrence Leday and Lester Thomas, two of Mr. Leday’s students who attended classes during the 2013-14 school year, had the opportunity to be employed by a local welding company.

Neighborhood Book Club
Ms. Wanda Johnson, ELC-STC Literacy Coordinator/Tutor is being spotlighted for her efforts to promote literacy among our students. For five weeks over the summer break, Ms. Johnson, her two children, a student from St. Martinville High School, and her pastor, Pastor Rob, donated their time to the children of St. Martinville. They served students in grades Pre-K to 8. The activities stretched across all subject areas, including art and cursive handwriting. Students read, explored, and wrote books. The students were also treated to a visit from Lorena Bellow, Lafayette's youngest author. She read to them and allowed an opportunity for questions. Kudos to Ms. Johnson. Thank you for investing in the students of St. Martin Parish.

Cecilia High School
Cecilia High made the list of the top 10 performing schools in Acadiana for AP Tests, ranked alongside Lafayette High, Comeaux High, and New Iberia Senior High. Fifty-seven Cecilia High students took the Advanced Placement Exam--including 28 sophomores who completed the school’s first offering ever of AP U.S. Government. Of the students who took the test, 18.8% of them scored 3 or higher, outscoring Comeaux (18.2%), Carencro (17.0%), and Beau Chene (17.6%).
We are proud of CHS students who scored well on these difficult exams and especially proud of the AP Teachers who prepared them: Manda Choate, English; April Laneaux, Calculus; Claudia Nickens, World History & U.S. Government; and Rainie Hebert, World History.
