Moving Forward with Team;
Enhancing the Vision!

August, 2014

Message from the Superintendent

â€œYou can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to
learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he
lives.”    ~Clay P. Bedford

As we begin a new school year (2014-2015), it is my pleasure to welcome
back school system employees and students.  I also want to welcome our new
teachers and those who are returning after spending some time in other
districts. I am sincerely grateful that these educators chose to teach in
the St. Martin Parish School System. I recognize that with the vast number
of teacher vacancies existing across the state, these individuals could have
easily sought employment in other districts. We will make every effort to
provide our employees with the support and assistance needed to ensure their

It is important that all employees, students, and education stakeholders
are aware of the St. Martin Parish School System’s mission and vision as we
begin our school year.   Our mission is to provide quality educational
experiences while utilizing a TEAM approach with all stakeholders focused on
SUCCESS.  Our vision is to improve education through sound educational
practices that enhance teaching and learning and provide educational
opportunities for all stakeholders in an effort to make the St. Martin
Parish School District second to none in the region, state, and nation.
Much preparation has been done to provide our educators with the resources
needed to enhance teaching and learning. Professional learning has been
provided to employees and will continue throughout the school year with
scheduled trainings and collaboration via school and district professional
learning communities.  The St. Martin Parish School Board has approved the
purchase of  ELA and math textbooks totaling $1.7 million dollars. The Board
recognized the needs of our teachers in June, 2014 and has provided our
educators with much needed resources. I applaud the Board for understanding
the challenges of teachers writing their own curricula.
As the debate continues in Baton Rouge among BESE, Superintendent John
White, and Governor Jindal regarding the assessment we will use in the
Spring, 2014, we will not be distracted. We will continue the implementation
of Common Core State Standard (CCSS) because this is the charge given to us
by BESE. We will continue our efforts to improve student outcomes and will
remain committed to educational excellence.

In closing, please note that I have an open door policy as your
superintendent.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have thoughts
on how to improve in various areas within the school system.  Again, we must
operate as a team in order to yield successful outcomes.  Together we can!
 Welcome Back to School!

Summer Programs Provided Students with Future Career Opportunities

The St. Martin Parish School System provided students the opportunity to experience fields that they are interested in for their future.
The AHEC (Area Health Education Center) Program was provided for students who have an interest in the medical field.  Seven students from our three high schools were accepted into the two week program.  They had to complete 90 hours of work.  The students went to St. Agnes Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Heart of Hospice, and Lafayette General Hospital.  St. Martin Hospital hosted the program.  Ms. Tyranny Taylor, sponsor, teaches at St. Martinville High.  Participating students, Lyndsy Callier, Tayler Gary, Amy Ho (BBHS); Heather Constatine, Dasha Noel, Kazi Rahman (CHS); and Samantha Zeno (SMSH) earned a ½ credit for completing the program.
Students interested in welding were given the opportunity to attend a two week extended welding program at St. Martinville High.  Mr. Johnny Leday was the instructor.  Lawrence Leday and Lester Thomas, two of Mr. Leday’s students who attended classes during the 2013-14 school year, had the opportunity to be employed by a local welding company.

 Vanel Porter

When the bell rings on August 13th, Vanel Porter will be a senior at St. Martinville Senior High.  Vanel is a product of St. Martin Parish schools, attending the public schools in St. Martinville her entire educational life.  She is a student who comes from a background of poverty, who has achieved exceptional academic and personal accomplishments. She took the ACT for the first time in December of 2013 and scored a 27 composite. She retook the ACT in March of 2014 and improved her composite score to 34.  Vanel  has maintained a GPA of 4.0 while also being a member of the school’s Academic Decathlon team, as well as National Honor Society, Key Club, Beta Club, Interact Club, Dead Poets Society, Student Council, YACA, Freshmen Mentor, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters Bigs in School Program. This past spring,  she traveled to Washington D.C. to represent St. Martin Parish and St. Martinville High at the Child Advocacy Summit.  Vanel is an outstanding student, person, and representative of our public schools!

Neighborhood Book Club

Ms. Wanda Johnson, ELC-STC Literacy Coordinator/Tutor is being spotlighted for her efforts to promote literacy among our students.  For five weeks over the summer break, Ms. Johnson, her two children, a student from St. Martinville High School, and her pastor, Pastor Rob, donated their time to the children of St. Martinville.  They served students in grades Pre-K to 8.  The activities stretched across all subject areas, including art and cursive handwriting.  Students read, explored, and wrote books.  The students were also treated to a visit from Lorena Bellow, Lafayette's youngest author.  She read to them and allowed an opportunity for questions.  Kudos to Ms. Johnson.  Thank you for investing in the students of St. Martin Parish.

Cecilia High School

Cecilia High made the list of the top 10 performing schools in Acadiana for AP Tests, ranked alongside Lafayette High, Comeaux High, and New Iberia Senior High.  Fifty-seven Cecilia High students took the Advanced Placement Exam--including 28 sophomores who completed the school’s first offering ever of AP U.S. Government.  Of the students who took the test, 18.8% of them scored 3 or higher, outscoring Comeaux (18.2%), Carencro (17.0%), and Beau Chene (17.6%).
We are proud of CHS students who scored well on these difficult exams and especially proud of the AP Teachers who prepared them: Manda Choate, English; April Laneaux, Calculus; Claudia Nickens, World History & U.S. Government; and Rainie Hebert, World History.
