Dear Cultural Companions,
Greetings! We've been offered free tickets for two wonderful events next week, and I want to strongly encourage you to take advantage of them by inviting your refugee companion and attending together! I can vouch for the quality of both of these events:
- New Haven Symphony Orchestra: 10 free tickets to the Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven orchestra on Thursday, March 31 from 7:30-9 pm. Click HERE for more information.
- If you and your refugee companion are able to attend, please write to Tanya Genn, education coordinator, copied in this email, with your name and the name of your refugee companion. We'll give tickets on a first-respond, first-serve basis.
- Africa Salon concert: last year, we had 60 IRIS clients from ALL countries attend and absolutely LOVE this concert. Unlimited free tickets for refugees and their friends on Sunday, April 3 from 7-10 pm. Click HERE for more information.
- If you and your refugee companion are able to attend, please write to Harper Loonsk, IRIS volunteer, copied in this email, with your name and the name of your refugee companion.
Thank you for walking alongside refugees, and we hope you'll take advantage of these offers!
Best,
Laurel and Betty

Check out Teens 4 Refugees, an organization that believes the pen is the most powerful instigator of change. They write to spread awareness about the hardships faced by refugees and about ways we can help them. They are seeking writes and editors, and are even willing to distribute letters of recommendation, volunteer hours, and certificates after 2 months of contributing to the organization.
Yale Refugee Project is incredibly impressed by Teens 4 Refugees and strongly urges you to check them out at www.teens4refugees.com!

Direct Assistance Activity of the Week
Translation can be an incredible tool if there is a substantial language barrier between you and your refugee companion. Although not available for your every visit, with a diverse community on campus and around New Haven, you are likely to find someone who can translate short pieces for you and your companion. Try writing 1-page stories at first, giving your translator only a small job, and your companion an unintimidating task. Be sensitive of your refugee companion’s past, and suggest positive topics, like writing about your favorite day or your favorite place.
