At Crooked Gap Farm we are always looking for ways to grow and make the most sustainable farm that we can.
That is what has led us to use older breeds of livestock that thrive outdoors, rotate our hogs through the woodlots, begin to hatch out our own chicks, and continually seek out ways to improve our final product and the way we raise our livestock. With that in mind we have been aggressively researching a switch from conventional GMO feed rations to a Non-GMO feed ration for our hogs and poultry (the cattle and sheep are 100% grassfed).
Ethan recently did some research into the subject, specifically when it comes to hog feed rations, and he discussed various Non-GMO articles on Episode 50 of The Beginning Farmer Show
(you'll find links to the articles and the audio from the podcast). Obviously there are a lot of people on either side of the issue, but in our search for continued sustainability for our farm we are interested in doing what is best for our pigs/chickens, soils, over-all environment, and of course for you!
The switch from conventional GMO feeds to Non-GMO feed would be a big step for us and would require more labor and a decent amount of capital investment in the beginning to get set-up for the change. Because of that, we would love to hear your thoughts on the subject. We have created a very short survey to gauge what is most import to all of our farm fans. If you would take a minute or two to fill it out we would be so very thankful!
