Assumption Celebrates Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week 2013 was held January 28 – February 1. Students and parents kicked off the week by speaking about the benefits of a Catholic school education at local parish Masses. To hear why our Catholic grade school students love Catholic Schools, click here.

Tuesday, students welcomed 21-year-old guest speaker Isaiah Krull, who shared how his faith helped him recover and truly cherish life after sustaining life altering injuries from a car accident at age 16.

Throughout Catholic Schools Week, Assumption took part in the combined Scott County K-12 Catholic Schools Week project, Dodgeball for Diapers, benefiting Bethany Home for Children and Families. Wednesday, students donated $3 to the project to spend the school day in their pajamas instead of school uniforms, and Friday afternoon students participated in a dodgeball tournament, with all entry fees going to purchase diapers. Assumption students collected just under 12,000 diapers and $1,000, which combined with the grade schools’ donations to total over 19,000 diapers and $1,800 being donated to Bethany Home. Read an article about the project here.

The annual All Schools Mass was held Thursday, January 31, at Assumption for students, faculty, and staff of the Scott County Catholic Schools. A new addition to the Mass this year was the combined K-12 choir, which consisted of students from Assumption, and 6th, 7th, and 8th graders from All Saints Catholic, St. Paul the Apostle, John F. Kennedy, and Lourdes Catholic School. Bishop Martin Amos concelebrated the Mass with several other priests from the Davenport Diocese. To view the Mass photo gallery, please click here.

Students Show Off Creativity at Science Fair

Assumption hosted the annual Science Fair for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students on Feb. 8 in the Figge Library. Students from all four Catholic grade schools showed off their projects and shared their questions, research, hypotheses, results, and conclusions.

Seniors Thomas Bush and Allison Hanser, along with juniors Andrew Quested, Haley Bugos, Sydnie Gengler and Rachel Sigwarth served as judges for the event.

Fall Play to be Showcased at International Thespian Festival

Assumption’s fall theater production, The Pitman Painters, has been selected as one of only 10 schools to perform on the main stage at the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska this upcoming June. The festival main stage is a showcase for the best in school theater, and the Knight Players will be performing for over 2,000 thespians from around the country.

Drama Director, Leslie LaCorte, says of the honor, “It’s a great life-learning experience for the students and a worthy tribute to their hours of hard work and training. I’m so proud to work with students who are dedicated to their project and who are able to carry it out with such great professionalism and poise. Bringing a show to Festival is a daunting task, but I’m sure the students will make Assumption proud – again!””

Assumption Band Students Receive High Marks

Assumption’s jazz bands, Central Park Jazz and the JazzKnights, under the direction of Ms. Melanie Wulfekuhle, received high Division II (Excellent) ratings as well as outstanding comments from their judges at the State jazz Band Festival in Tiffin held January 12 and 13.

Junior Carolina Roa and sophomore Mary Kate Hines were selected from hundreds of high school musicians throughout Iowa to represent Assumption at the University of Northern Iowa “Northern Festival of Bands.” After two and a half days of rehearsing with guest directors on the UNI campus, the weekend concluded with the final concert held in the Gallagher-Bluedom Performing Arts Center in Cedar Falls.

Ms. Wulfekuhle is in her 6th year as Director of Bands, and is very proud of the growing program and the accomplishments of her students. “Our student musicians work hard to maintain a tradition of excellence within the band program. While continuing to earn honors at the All State and Solo/Ensemble Music Festivals, they have also earned Assumption’s first-ever Division I Superior rating at State Jazz Band Festival and Assumption’s first set of consecutive Division I Superior ratings at the State Large Group Festival.”

Come witness the talent of Assumption’s bands for yourself at the Winter Band Concert to be held in Sunderbruch Auditorium on Thursday, February 21.

Art Club Takes First Place at Festival of Trees

Assumption’s Art Club, under the supervision of Mrs. Holly Secker, was awarded first place in the “Most Historic Theme” category at the Quad City Arts annual Festival of Trees. Their tree, “Home for the Holidays,” was created using a military theme, and was decorated with actual military fatigues, ribbons, and badges.

Students, parents, and Art Club members donated supplies to create eight care packages which were sent to troops overseas upon completion of the Festival. Amazingly, one of the care packages went to a troop in Afghanistan whose Unit Commander, Wes Golden, taught at Assumption High School from 1995-1997.

Speech Students Win All State Honors at Large Group Competition

After competing at Large Group District Speech in mid-January, 12 students were selected to move on to the State competition on February 2nd in the categories of Musical Theater, Ensemble Acting, Readers Theater, and Group Improv. Sam Jones and Liam Baldwin received Outstanding ratings for their performances in both Ensemble Action and Musical Theater at State, and also received All State Honors for their Musical Theater performance of “I’m All Alone” from Spamalot.
