Marcus Miller will be presenting the paper entitled ‘The Invisible Hand and the Banking Trade: Seigniorage, Risk-Shifting, and More’ co-authored with Lei Zhang at the European Conference on Banking and the Economy in Winchester Guildhall Wednesday March 6th.

Fabian Waldinger will be presenting his paper 'Bombs, Brains, and Science – The Role of Human and Physical Capital for the Creation of Scientific Knowledge' in Glasgow on Thursday March 7th.

Daniel Sgroi has just completed a series of presentations of his joint paper with Andrew Oswald and Eugenio Proto entitled 'Happiness and Productivity' at Leicester, Birmingham and Glasgow.

Book Launch 

The Great Depression of the 1930s: Lessons for Today, edited by Nicholas Crafts and Peter Fearon, will be launched at the British Academy on March 4th. The book contains 14 papers with expert reviews of what modern scholarship tells us about the 1930s which have been written to highlight lessons relevant to the current crisis and recovery from it. The guest speaker for the event is Dave Ramsden, Chief Economic Advisor to HM Treasury.

Distinguished Visitor Lecture Series: Lord Professor Meghnad Desai

Lord Professor Meghnad Desai, an economist by profession and a keen observer of British politics, will be speaking at the University of Warwick Department of Economics in March as part of its Distinguished Visitor Lecture Series.

His lecture is scheduled to begin at 6pm on Wednesday March 6th in the Physics Lecture Theatre (PLT). The hour-long lecture will be followed by a drinks reception, providing an opportunity for informal conversation with the speaker. All are welcome to attend.

Lord Desai has published books on everything from the film star Dilip Kumar to applied econometrics. He is Chairman of the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum, a Professor at the LSE and has been the front bench spokesman for the Labour Party on education.

A Thai language hardback edition of Chris Doyle’s book ‘Essentials of Modern Spectrum Management’ CUP, 2007 co-authored with Martin Cave and William Webb has just been published accompanying an earlier Korean language edition.

Luigi Grossi (Verona) will be visiting the Department this week and will be based in room S2.80.
