Campaign speeds up for faster business broadband

Map unlocks insights into regional performance

The Regional Australia Institute (RAI) has developed an online interactive map to unlock insights into regional performance. [In]Sight: Australia’s Regional Competitiveness Index snapshots the competitiveness of Australia’s Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Regional Development Australia (RDA) regions by highlighting data and rankings for 10 themes and 68 indicators. 

CODE documentary tackles tech gaps

The Creative Collective is hosting a screening of CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap on 12 May, a film that explores the reasons behind the gender and minority gap in tech. The film highlights breakthrough efforts which are producing more diverse programmers and shows how a more inclusive environment can lead to innovation. Local businesses are encouraged to pay it forward and buy an extra ticket for every ticket they buy, and allow young local students the chance to watch the insightful and hopefully inspiring movie.

Free WiFi expands across region

Sunshine Coast Council has installed new WiFi access points at Mooloolaba Beach, Alexandra Headland and Maroochydore Beach, expanding WiFi to over 70 access points at 21 locations across the region. Mayor Mark Jamieson said WiFi was one of many smart integrated technologies council is trialling and installing as part of its Smart City Framework.

Website provides rollout schedule for Mobile Blackspot Programme

Telstra has launched a new website which provides detail on the construction status and timing of the 429 new or upgraded mobile base stations being constructed under the Mobile Black Spot Programme. The mobile black spot website provides an indicative activation schedule for individual base stations, presented on a national map.
Round 2 of the Advance Queensland Community Digital Champions program closes on 13 May 2016. Digital Champions are individuals who are passionate digital advocates, wanting to give back to their community by helping others become digitally-savvy. See the current champions.

You can receive a wage subsidy of up to $10,000 when you hire and retain eligible mature age staff through the Australian Government’s recruitment service jobactive. Mature workers aged 50 years and over can help your business grow and thrive. As well as having broad skills and a wealth of experience, mature age job seekers are great mentors to other staff and are ready to contribute from day one.

For the sixth year, TechSoup's annual Digital Storytelling Challenge will help not-for-profit and charitable organisations create stories to showcase their great work and to help fundraise and advocate for their causes.

Grants and funding opportunities

Visit our regional grants page for a list of grants available for business, events and other community programs including:
  • Sunshine Coast Council’s Community Partnership Funding Program will open for expressions of interest in early May. The program provides up to three-year funding towards operational expenses to not-for-profit organisations which provide facilities or services which support the delivery of council’s corporate priorities and demonstrate broad community benefit.
  • Applications for Sunshine Coast Council’s Minor Grants program close on 4 May 2016. Apply for up to $2,000 to fund community projects. Applications must align with a specific grant category. 
  • Sunshine Coast Council’s Sports Field Maintenance Funding Program closes on 23 May 2016. The program offers up to three years of funding to help maintain sports fields in the region.
