Holt Micro-Forest News

Welcome to the 3rd Holt Micro-Forest newsletter! In this newsletter we highlight our recent fundraising achievements and invite you to some upcoming events. Don't forget to drop by the Holt Shops this coming Saturday 24 July to pick up your Crowdfunding Reward Pack. Checkout the events section of this newsletter for details.

Bunnings fundraiser: A big congratulations to all those involved in organising and running the Bunnings fundraiser on 11 July. In total $1460.01 was raised to contribute to developing the Holt Micro-Forest. A fantastic effort! A shout out and thank you to Silvia Ugrinic who led this event for our community with support from Tree Create.

Nature in the City Grant: Holt Micro-Forest has received a $15,000 grant from the ACT Government under the Nature in the City scheme! This grant provides funding to contribute towards aspects such as landscape design, water harvesting design, earthworks and fence hire, and will go a long way towards helping to establish the Micro-Forest and exploring our stretch goals such as a nature play area. Thank you to Tracy Benson and Edwina Robinson for their work on the grant application, and to Capital Region Community Services for sponsoring the application.

New Website
You may have noticed a new design to our Holt Micro-Forest website! A big thank you and shout out to community member John Holloway for setting up this platform for us. The new site is easier to navigate for users, and easier to maintain for administrators.

Help Wanted! Website Information Manager
With the new and improved platform now in place for our website, we are looking for assistance from a volunteer community member to help update and maintain the information on the website. Are you good at organising and presenting information? This volunteer role might be the right one for you! Please contact if you'd like to find out more details and become involved.

Letterbox Flyer Delivery Around Boyle Place Playground
We are completing a second letterbox flyer drop early this week (thank you Gerard Dwyer) targeting the streets surrounding the Boyle Place Playground. The flyer identifies the Boyle Place Playground as the preferred site, gives an overview of our funding, and also encourages local residents to attend our upcoming community events to help shape the initiative. We know a lot of the Holt community are on social media, but the letterbox drop enables us to reach those who are not. We want to ensure everyone who wants to contribute can get involved! We will also soon have some signs around the park too. Watch this space!

Upcoming Events

Saturday 24 July 10:30 am - 12:00 pm. Information Stall and Crowdfunding Reward Collection.
There will be an information display at Holt Shops on Saturday 24 July. This is a great chance to find out more about the project and talk to the Holt Micro-Forest community about your ideas, values and priorities for the forest. Crowdfunding donation reward packs will also be available for collection on the day. If you cannot attend, don't worry, just email to make alternatives arrangements for collection of donation packs. If the weather is wet on the day, we will be inside the beautiful Wattlebird Canberra Soap Shop (just around the corner from Uno Hair Design).

Monday 26 July 6 pm - 8 pm. Climate Projects Zoom Case.
Over the past three months, Holt Community member Jennifer Bardsley has been participating as a mentee in a Climate Leaders Mentoring Program, partnered with The Climate Factory's Edwina Robinson. On Monday 26 July from 6 - 8 pm, all the projects within this program are being presented at an online event. In this 2 hour Zoom session, real people will be showcasing initiatives that span from creating a community micro-forest to setting up a tool library all the way to making so much better use of coffee grinds, just to name a few. Then you’ll have the chance to ask questions, steal ideas and find out how you can contribute in a breakout session with your favourite speaker. You'll go away nurtured by the experience of a like-minded community out to make a difference! Please join us! To register, click here

Sunday 1 August 4 pm - 6 pm. Holt Community Consultation.
We are holding a Holt Micro-Forest online community consultation session in order to better understand community values so that these may be incorporated into design priorities for the Holt Micro-Forest. The session will be facilitated by sustainability expert Liesl Codrington and The Climate Factory's Edwina Robinson. This is a great chance to engage with the community as we start the process of designing our micro-forest.

If you would like to attend, you can register your interest on Facebook. Details on how to join the event will be provided closer to day via the next newsletter, on our website and social media channels.
