News from the UTE Decentralized Academy & the ISO Theatre 2016
All across Europe a series of three masterclasses for young European actors and one artistic residency took place this summer in context of the CONFLICT ZONES network programme of the UTE in collaboration with the Teatro Nacional São João do Porto, the Comédie de Reims, the National Theatre of Greece, the European Cultural Centre of Delphi and the Sfumato Laboratory Theatre in Sofia. With the public presentation on 1st July of the ISO Theatre's masterclass directed by Margarita Mladenova and Ivan Dobchev at the Sfumato Theatre in Sofia this year's season comes to an end; for now.
This autumn already, the UTE Decentralized Academy will offer a new masterclass for young stage directors and stage designers in Russia. Directed by the Teatrul Bulandra's artistic director, Alexandru Darie, and an important dramaturg, this masterclass will be a collaboration with the Maly Theatre Moscow and the Rostov Drama Theatre.

Favouring transmission and inter-cultural dialogue, the UTE Decentralized Academy contributes to the development of links between artists of the European continent, while enabling an act of transmission between young artists and great “masters” of our time.

"Second Hand"
The ISO Theatre in Sofia

27 June – 2 July 2016
Exclusive ISO masterclass directed by Margarita Mladenova & Ivan Dobchev

"The idea is through the garment to resurrect the human, his unique personal being and so to form his monologue."

A fragment of No - I by Samuel Beckett

"We will apply as creative tools theatrical techniques and practices 'outside-inside'; we will provoke the imagination, the sensory memory and the ability of the actor to empathize 'entering' in someone's life. We will find a path from the game to the no-game, through a series of individual attempts to a theatrical re-construction of the genius text of Beckett, formed by the monologues of a group of nameless people. Let us look at the nameless human, the human second hand." M. Mladenova, I. Dobchev

Masterclass in Delphi

From 11 – 22 June 2016, the UTE Decentralized Academy in collaboration with the National Theatre of Greece in Athens, offered a masterclass for young actors at the European Cultural Centre of Delphi directed by Greek actress Lydia Koniordou.

The masterclass brought together six young actors from Italy, Hungary, Portugal and Russia and eight young actors from the National Theatre of Greece to work together with Lydia Koniordou on Antigone by Sophocles and on the refugee crisis.

The participants offered a public presentation of their work in the ancient theatre of Delphi on 21 June 2016. The ancient theatre in Delphi was built in the 4th century B.C., and is usually not in use for public performances anymore because of its protected status. The National Theatre of Greece has asked for a special permission for the masterclass’ presentation at this historic place.

Masterclass in Reims

From 2 – 6 June 2016, the UTE Decentralized Academy offered a masterclass for young actors at the Comédie de Reims directed by artistic director and UTE Secretary Ludovic Lagarde.

The masterclass brought together six young actors from Bulgaria, France, Greece, Hungary and Italy to work together on texts by Falk Richter: Monologues and choral forms; contemporary loneliness; roaming in the globalized world; attempt at a political theatre; life turned into a conflict zone for each and every one; the feeling of being strangers in a foreign country in which one will never live – these were the thematic associations that stood at the beginning of the work process.

Read a report of the masterclass in Reims by Young Journalist Lucie Beraha in the UTE online theatre magazine The article is available in French and English.
