SCBC 2020/21 Competition Climbing Season
Dear BC Climbing Community,

As the world is in the midst of a global pandemic, we are all doing our best to take care of our mental and physical health. Climbing has changed, with many of our athletes heading outside as much as possible when the weather cooperates. We are thankful to our BC climbing gyms who have been working hard to provide safe spaces to climb indoors; please continue to support your local gym as times are difficult for them now. New provincial health orders have been announced today; please follow the orders to keep our community safe.

Your SCBC Board of Directors has been busy behind the scenes and we are excited to share with you some of our new partnerships and opportunities for athletes.

Identified Athlete and Coach Support

Sport Climbing British Columbia is pleased to announce an exciting new partnership with the Canadian Sport Institute (CSI). The agreement facilitates the opportunity for identified BC climbers and coaches to succeed in their quest for Olympic, World Championship and World Cup medals, along with national team placements.
Through the partnership, SCBC will nominate athletes and coaches that meet specific criteria for the Canadian Sport Institute. Upon registration, athletes and coaches can engage in enhanced programs, benefits, and selected support services through the Canadian Sport Institute and the network of PacificSport regional centres in BC.
The CSI has recently opened the ‘speakers series’ to all athletes, coaches and members of the public. Information on the speakers series can be found here.
The Canadian Sport Institute athlete support is tiered across four levels. An outline of athlete programs and services can be found here.

Provincial Training Centre - Difficulty & Speed

SCBC is excited to announce our new partnership with the Richmond Olympic Oval through 2022. Under this partnership, the Oval will be the Provincial Training Centre for Difficulty and Speed Climbing. This partnership will see collaboration on high performance initiatives and training camps. It is the Oval’s and SCBC’s intent to centralize the facilities, programs and services required to develop and train community, provincial and national team climbing athletes. The SCBC Board of Directors is looking forward to working with the Oval and is pleased with the new facilities and opportunities that will be available to our athletes.

2020/21 SCBC Competition Season

We realize that all our athletes and families are wanting to know about the competition season for the year. Unfortunately, with the current state of Covid-19 and ongoing / continually changing restrictions in place, it is very difficult to plan a competition season. Having said that, SCBC is continuing to think about ways we can have competition happen for our athletes. We are being creative and thinking "outside the box." If CEC is able to host any events, SCBC will find a way to select athletes to attend. Of course, anything we plan must comply with all provincial health orders.

Here are some things you can do right now:
  • Get outside!! Go hiking, a mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding or climb on some real rock. Be sure to follow all appropriate Covid-19 protocols.
  • Support your local climbing gym!
  • Check out the Canadian Sport Institute Speaker Series! There are Certificate Programs, Presentations, Mini-Series and Podiumcasts available for free!
  • Have a Zoom call with your climbing friends from other places!
