North Park Improvements Project Moves Forward

Improvements to the North Park are scheduled to take place in 2017. The project was one of the top priorities identified in the City’s Parks and Recreation Plan and one of the top three goals identified in the City’s 2013 Strategic Priority Goals. This phase of proposed improvements to the North Park include:
  1. Tennis Court Area – Construction of a theater/tennis wall. New Fencing and lighting and other associated appurtenances
  2. Carousel Area – Construction of a plaza and amphitheater
  3. Bandstand Aea – The existing bandstand will require some brick restoration. In addition, a roof will also be built over the bandstand and the construction of a picnic area, and
  4. Trail – will be constructed linking these three areas providing easier access for our senior population and handicapped individuals
The total estimated cost of the project is $403,500 and the city has received a grant from Story County in the amount of $95,750 with remaining funding from Tax Increment Financing.

Our Fight for Air Climb champs for the fifth straight year – Ryan Peterson, Brian Watson, Tyler Oberender, and Trent Whipple … and for all our volunteer firefighters, police officers, and first responders who serve, protect, and take care of us when we are in need.

How about some Lefse for …
Co-chairs Sheri Keigan and Diana Keech who juggled many balls and for all of those who volunteered for this year’s Scandinavian Days Festival, and
St. Petri Lutheran Church who opened their doors and welcomed St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church to worship in their church, and
to Stephen Anenson who retired as minister after many years serving Immanuel Lutheran Church.

And a heap of mashed potatoes for …

Mayor Jensen, Council Members Ostrem & Watson, Parks & Recreation Superintendent Moran, Erin Barkema, Michaela Carlson, Mari Janes, Jody Larson, and Pete Tekippe who worked together on designing the refurbishment and redevelopment of the South Park.

Another serving of mixed vegetables for …

Perhaps another helping of cranberry sauce for …
Woodland Farms that raises turkeys one of which was presented to and hopefully pardoned by President Reagan, and
Vena Mae Larson who writes the greatest notes with beautiful penmanship I might add, and
For all of those who have been so active in so many ways at the River Bend Golf Course for they have truly given their time, talent, and treasure making it such an outstanding place to play.

And some rutabagas
for my wife Elizabeth (who looks forward to them on Thanksgiving) who often reminds me that, “kindness is free.”

A special prayer for …
My friend, who was everyone’s friend, and was one of our community leaders -  Rich Olive – who gave so much and is missed by so many.

And finally, take the time to count your blessings this Thanksgiving Season because there is plenty to be thankful for.
