How Sweet It Is....
Sugars
 
The average American consumes 152 pounds of sugar in one year equal to 3 pounds in one week. This sugar shock correlates directly with the massive consumption of dead, processed food. The refined sugars (including high fructose corn syrup) that make up this 152 pound consumption has zero nutritional value.  What's the big deal?:
  • Its Addictive.
  • It's GMO-city.
  • It makes you fat.
  • It messes with your mood and energy.

Artificial Sweeteners
 
It seems like the only option is to replace sugar with artificial sweeteners. This is the worst replacement EVER.  In addition to shoving low-fat and chemical-laden "health foods" down our throats, the Diet Dictocrats have touted sugar-free options in the form of diet soft drinks, cookies, and others as a safe and tasty alternative for weight loss and diabetics. This is a bad idea because:
  • It causes weight gain.
  • More GMOs.
  • It's linked to numerous health issues.

Natural Alternatives

Natural Alternatives wreak less havoc on your body, but many also contain beneficial nutrients the way nature intended them to.  It is best to enjoy these in moderation. Natural alternatives include:
  • Raw, local (ideally) honey.
  • Real Maple Syrup.
  • Coconut or Palm Sugar.
  • Muscovado Brown Sugar.
  • Sorghum.
  • Rapadura or Sucanat.
  • Stevia.
  • Unsulphured Molasses.
If the recipe calls for..                              
  • White sugar  - equal amounts of rapadura/sucanat, coconut/palm sugar, maple sugar or use 3/4 of honey in place of one cup of white sugar.                            
  • Brown Sugar - Equal amounts of Muscovado brown sugar, rapadura/sucanat, or coconut/palm sugar.
  • Corn Syrup - equal amounts of sorghum or maple syrup; 3/4 cup of honey in place of one cup of corn syrup.
Begin using just one natural sweetener in place of regular sugar and then incrementally add more to your arsenal. Remember its progress not perfection!

Recipe of the Month

Sticky Apple Bars
 


Prep time: 15 mins
Total time: 15 mins
Serves: 4-6

Ingredients
:

Crust

  • 12 medjool dates, pits removed
  • 1 cup almond butter
  • ¼ cup raw honey
  • ¼ cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • ½ cup coconut cream concentrate
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • pinch of salt
For the toppings
  • 3 apples, cored and thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons golden label virgin coconut oil
  • ½ cup walnuts, roughly chopped
  • ¼ cup raw honey
  • 2 tablespoons coconut cream concentrate
  • pinch of cinnamon
  • pinch of salt










Instructions:

  1. First make your crust. Add all ingredients for the crust to a food processor. (you may need to heat up your coconut cream concentrate aka coconut butter)
  2. Put crust ingredients in an 8×8 or 9×9 glass baking dish, press down until evenly distributed.
  3. Now heat up a large skillet under medium heat. Add your coconut oil then your sliced apples.
  4. Once apples begin to become soft, add your walnuts. Be sure to continuously stir so the apples and walnuts do not burns.
  5. Once apples are wilted, add your honey and coconut cream concentrate along with cinnamon and salt.
  6. When all ingredients are incorporated, pour mixture on top of crust and press flat. Put in the fridge to harden for 30-45 minutes.
  7. Cut into squares and serve!!
