FREE ONLINE PARENTING PROGRAM

Parents can play an important role in protecting their teenagers from mental health problems like depression and anxiety.
Researchers from Monash University and the University of Melbourne are looking for parents of 12 to 15 year-olds to take part in a free trial of a personalised online parenting program. The program offers practical strategies parents can use to support their teenager’s mental health.

If you are a parent or guardian of a child aged 12 to 15, you may be eligible to participate. Participation will take a few hours of yours and your child’s time, over 3 to 12 months. Both you and your child will be reimbursed for your time.

Please note, as the program is designed to prevent depression and anxiety problems, researchers are looking for parents of teenagers who do not have any current mental health difficulties.

WACSSO Q&A

Education Consultant Greg Mitchell is forty years married and has three kids and eight grandkids under the age of 10! Greg will be presenting a session on positive communication at WACSSO Conference.
Describe yourself in three words - Enthusiastic, whole-hearted kind-of-a-guy-who-likes-to-push-the-limits.
What is your favourite school memory? The day my parents came to my 'induction as a prefect' ceremony, arrived late and walked down the middle isle of the whole school assembly of over a thousand kids holding hands. Mum was dressed in a mother of the bride out fit in a kind of electric sky blue that kind of matched her beautiful blue hair. Cringingly gorgeous.
What was your favourite school subject? I am a little dyslexic and as a result don’t have too many subjects that I really enjoyed. I loved the school musicals though… even though I can’t sing a note worth hearing. I really hate musical theatre too but it was the first time I felt like a member of a team and I learned how to stand up in front of other people and speak… I even got some applause!
As a child, what did you want to ‘be when you grew up?’ Not my parents! I told my mum that I wanted to be an artist when I was eight and she told me that I’d have to learn to eat dog food because that would be all I’d be able to afford to eat from what I earned as an artist… My family were good at shooting down ambition.
Why do you think education is important? A good education gives you choices; it opens up horizons and helps you become a more tolerant, interesting human being.
What does parental engagement mean to you? Parental engagement means that you turn up, help out and support your kids, your kid’s teachers and your school. Parental engagement at its best is welcoming, warm and non-judgmental. It means that you are available to help out when there is a need that you can help with and that you are an advert for all the good stuff that your kid and your school is doing. It also means you give your opinions honestly without fear or judgement.
What piece of advice would you give to your 10 year-old self? Don’t worry, you won’t get the cuts ever again after this year. Give up football - you are not as good as you think. And there is a girl out there who will really love you so just be patient and don’t bother the other girls until she shows up!
Tell us a joke! What did zero say to eight … nice belt!

FAQ

Q. It's half way through the year and our President (or other office bearer) can no longer fulfill their duties. What do we do?

A: From time to time personal and other circumstances preclude office bearers from being able to complete their full one-year term of their role. As office bearer roles are voluntary, the person may resign from their role, in writing.

If willing, an executive member can act in the vacant role until the role can be filled (i.e. VP can take on role of Acting President). The P&C should advertise nominations for the vacant role and vote in the new office bearer at a Special Meeting or the next General Meeting.
