Performances, service, and innovative teaching

Dr. Bret Pimentel recently performed a recital of traditional and non-traditional interpretations of music by Georg Philipp Telemann on a variety of woodwind instruments. He was assisted by Dr. Kumiko Shimizu on harpsichord and piano and Nicole Davis on cello.

Kumiko Shimizu (collaborative piano) performed at the Song Collaborators Consortia Art Song Festival held at West Texas A&M University in October 2013. One of the performances included a world premiere of Bruce Trinkley’s The Sylvan Cycle.

The DSU Department of Music Alumnus/a of the Year Award
Now Accepting Nominations
If you are a graduate of Delta State University, we invite you to make nominations for the DSU Department of Music Alumnus/a of the Year Award. Nominees for the award must be graduates of the DSU Department of Music and display excellence in the field of music. To make a nomination please go the Department of Music website and follow the link to “Alumni News†to view selection criteria and download the nomination form. Alumni Spotlight: Sue (Johnson) Howard

Sue (Johnson) Howard (BM, 1959), has completed her 35th year as organist/pianist at the First Congregational Church of Pelham, New Hampshire. She has had a varied career in music and in the secretarial field, working for the Baldwin Piano Company in Greenwood, MS in the early 1960's, as well as at Steed & Hearn Music Co. in Greenwood. From 1962-1963, she worked at Hemphill Music Company and played solo piano and organ around Jackson, MS.
After moving to San Antonio, Texas in 1964, she played piano with her brother's combo, the Johnny Johnson Quartet, at all the Air Force bases at Ft. Sam Houston. In 1969, Sue moved to Rhode Island and was secretary to the Chief Judge of the District Court of RI, as well as playing piano three nights a week at the Holland House, where she met her husband, Richard. They married in 1971 and had two children, Lauren and John, and five grandchildren. Sue's husband, Richard, passed away in January 2012. While living in New Hampshire, Sue had a 24 year career working the Legal Department of BAE Systems of North America, retiring in 2001.
Sue continues to hone her love and ability for playing jazz on the piano and plays at least twice a month at the Acton Jazz Café in Acton, Massachusetts at their jam sessions. She plays with the American Legion Dance Band from Hudson, NH, and accompanies choral groups at Central High School in Manchester, NH. Sue sends best wishes to all of her DSU friends.
