Hello everyone,

During these ever changing times, we thought you may appreciate a fortnightly update to share with you news of our services as well as tips on looking after ourselves from carers, professional bodies and our own team.

  • We are planning to deliver regular Wellbeing Sessions online; some live sessions and some pre-recorded sessions for carers that would like to access these at a different time to suit them. Check out our website and facebook pages.
  • Our Telephone Interpreting Service is now up and running so that our team can best support all carers regardless of their native tongue. We are hugely thankful to The Best of Bensham Collaborative for their grant to get this service going.
  • Our New Gateshead Carers Website has officially been launched and is awaiting your visit!  Please let all of your contacts know!  It is designed to make it even clearer and easier for you to find what you want and with lots of opportunities to get involved and to contact us including a Live Chat feature. Please let us know what your experience is - we would love to hear your feedback.
  • Our Carers Emergency Fund Appeal has got off to a fantastic start! Find out how you can make a difference below.
  • Read the latest health advice and information on service disruptions from Gateshead Council here.
Unpaid carer and published author, Helen Redfern, shares with us another blog on The Power of Connection: 5 Ways to Stay Connected Right Now. Read more below.

Keep looking after each other.  Wishing you much serenity and happiness.

Team Leader: Stakeholder Engagement

During these unprecedented times of a worldwide pandemic, we know carers will be put in a sometimes impossible position financially.

What do we need? Our aim is to ensure that the hardest hit can be helped by providing £25 for a weekly family shop. Our target  is to reach £5000 so that we can help 200 families manage better through these very difficult times.

Please can you help by donating just £10 - it will mean the world of difference to the wellbeing of unpaid carers and their families throughout the most deprived areas of our community in Gateshead.

Your wellbeing is at the heart of the sessions we run for carers. We aim firstly to encourage you to think about your own health and secondly, to enable you to build up resilience, so that you can carry on in your caring role with greater confidence if you wish to do so.

Have you read a book that you would like to recommend to carers, please let us know and we will happily share it.

Me and Mister P was recommended by one of our Carer Wellbeing Facilitators to a carer of an autistic child. It is a story about a child who has a bear come to stay. The bear represents an autistic brother. It's great for brothers and sisters of children with autism.

"Me and my eldest son are enjoying the book you recommended!"

St Chads Church Community Survey - can you help?

St Chads Church in Bensham is already an important space for many local people.  In addition to regular services, weddings and baptisms, St Chads has a strong track record of community support activities such as lunch clubs, youth clubs, support for asylum seekers and community events. St Chads wants to continue to offer support to anyone living in Bensham but urgently needs to replace the roof and repair damage to the building already caused by water getting in.  The great news is that we have been successful in getting to stage 2 with the Heritage Lottery Fund.  This gives us the chance to raise the £1.5 million we need to replace the roof and improve the community spaces in the church so we can do even more with local residents.  Please help us to raise the funding by completing the attached survey (link below) and giving us the community views that we need include to be successful with our funding application.
Thank you so much for wanting to make a difference!

The Power of Connection:
5 Ways to Stay Connected Right Now

Unpaid carer and published author, Helen Redfern, shares with us a some excellent tips in her article published in Yoga Matters (online Yoga and Wellness):

Self-care starts with self-knowledge. How can we make a priority of caring for our needs if we have not identified what our needs are?

We need to take time each day to check in with our bodies, minds and hearts. We need to develop an honesty with ourselves. We may not be reacting to the situation we find ourselves in as we might have hoped we would or expected we would. We have to be able to acknowledge that and accept that. We have to be kind to ourselves. READ MORE...
