Volunteer Telephone Befrienders for Carers

Ready to chat: We offer a Telephone Befriending service that aims to provide adult unpaid carers in Gateshead with some company and a friendly person to chat to and the chance to have a break from their caring role. Our lovely, friendly team of volunteer Telephone Befrienders are available to call a carer, that is registered with us, for a chat at a mutually agreed time every week. They're passionate about helping carers and many have personal experience of being a carer themselves. Read more...

Find out more about our Volunteer Befriending programme, which can offer telephone befriending for the carer or their cared for, as well as information on becoming a volunteer yourself, by contacting Claire Parker, Volunteer Coordinator at or sign up via our website.

"Thank you for the Carer Wellbeing Fund grant which allowed us a 4 day break away. It helped to refresh our batteries. The contact we have had with our Carer Wellbeing Facilitator has been very supportive and we cannot sing her praises enough - her dedication in giving advice and guidance has helped us greatly through our most difficult times. The carers are invaluable to anyone who needs support and help."

I hope you are all staying safe and well during these difficult times. As you know at GCA everyone is working from home but all of our services remain fully operational. The only thing missing is that we are no longer able to offer face to face meetings and this is in order to help keep you, your family and staff safe and to stop the spread of the virus.

There are still two weeks to go to complete our latest survey of carers in Gateshead. So far we have had over 200 completed surveys returned to us so a big thank you to everyone who has responded. Of course the more people who reply the more accurate and helpful the information received will be. That’s really important because it enables us to represent your views, your challenges and your lives, strongly and clearly to the local authority, health services, your councillors, MPs and government. We know the pressure on your time but the survey is vital to the work we do in representing carers in Gateshead. If you can find the time to complete the survey it would be greatly appreciated.

Our AGM this year is on Thursday 26th November starting at 11am and sadly we are not able to hold a public meeting because of government Covid-19 restrictions.  For the first time ever the event will be live streamed. That day is also national Carers Rights Day and at the meeting, we will be launching the findings of our carers’ survey. If you would like to attend, and we really hope you do, please book your place. All you need is an internet connection and either a mobile, tablet, laptop, or computer. Don’t worry if you’re unfamiliar with live streaming. Just let us know and we will tell you how to connect.

I hope you enjoy reading this issue and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the AGM and thank you for your continuing support for the organisation.

Steve Cowen
CEO, Gateshead Carers
Every three years we send out a comprehensive questionnaire to unpaid carers who live or work in Gateshead in the form of our Carers Survey.  We aim to encourage as many unpaid carers as possible to complete it, either online or by post and need your help to reach these carers by sharing this information far and wide. The Information gathered through this survey will shape and influence how we can support unpaid carers in the future and provide us with the information we need to make sure the voice of unpaid carers is heard. The survey closes on 31 October 2020 and should take approximately 35 minutes to complete. Click on the image above to complete the survey.

PRIZE DRAW - WIN £25!  Please see the end of the survey for more details.

#DoYourBit - Get the flu vaccination

People in the North East and Cumbria are known for looking out for one another and pulling together through difficult times. With winter around the corner the months ahead could be tough if there is a second wave of COVID-19, so it is more important than ever that you #DoYourBit to protect yourself, your NHS and your community.
North East and North Cumbria ICS is encouraging everyone to do their bit to protect yourself, your loved ones and the community by having the flu vaccination this winter.

Carers are entitled to a FREE flu vaccination if:
• you receive Carers Allowance
• you are the main carer for someone who may be at risk if you get sick
• you live with someone on the NHS Shielding list

Signal 'Lifemapping' with Carers

Gateshead Carers has teamed up with an international organisation called Signal in a 12 month pilot project, working with carers to enable them to assess where they need the most support and to develop a personalised Lifemap giving a clear representation of what is going well and areas for improvement. The evaluation and solutions are carer led, so the carer is at the centre of the process. Read more...

Annual General Meeting

Thursday, 26th November 2020
11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, our AGM in 2020 will be an online event which will be live streamed from our offices at John Haswell House.  It will be presented by our Chair of Trustees, David Clelland and CEO Steve Cowen, with only a few other trustees in attendance. Don't worry, you will not be live too on screen but instead you can enjoy the event from the privacy and comfort of your own home!

We will be sending an email to everyone who signs up closer to the date with a link to the live stream! Attendees at the event are also in with a chance of a special giveaway too!

This date has been chosen because it is Carers Rights Day and it will be on that day that we will also release our report giving the results of our 3 yearly survey of carers in Gateshead. The AGM will also focus on our impact over the past year and our plans going forward.

Creative Minds with Hands
Every Tuesday morning Gateshead Carers are running a creative group which is currently based upon the 10 x 10 Creative Gateshead project. Carers who join the group get sent a creative 'pack' which is full of paper, pens and an activity booklet. Every Tuesday morning we meet and we have one rule only; you can only say positive things about your own work. It works a treat! We normally all arrive with mugs full of more.
For further information please contact Emma at or call 07546 304759.
'I've been going through a tough time over the past few months/years and I'm always too busy dealing with other people's problems to have time for myself. I am finding the classes helpful because now everyone knows 10am Tuesday morning is my time, so no matter what happens it will have to wait until I've finished. I enjoy doing arts and crafts, I can get engrossed in what I'm doing and it takes my mind off my worries for a while.”

Please can you help us get the word out to reach more 'hidden' carers by forwarding this newsletter to everyone on your contacts list.  Many people do not seeing themselves as having a caring role, or having legal rights or knowing organisations like us exist. Thank you for sharing!
