veski fellowshipsIn addition to a second round of the 2013 veski innovation fellowships, the Minister for Innovation has asked veski to deliver the 2013 Victoria Prize for Science & Innovation and the Victoria Fellowships. This is a coup for veski and testament to the strength of our existing programs and activities.

If you or another researcher or scientist would like to apply for one of these prestigious science and innovation programs please visit the fellowships section on the veski website.

We are also proud to announce details of veski's new inspiring students (and teachers) program. As part of this pilot program, the veski family will work with and inspire students and teachers from Neerim District, Mooroopna and Kyneton secondary colleges.

This issue of veski highlights provides more information about these exciting new programs.

Finally, join us 'in conversation' with our veski innovation fellows and find out how they got started in science, what their labs look like today (and tomorrow) and how their research makes a difference to Victoria.

Kind regards

Ms Julia L Page

Three prestigious fellowships now open
Apply now for three prestigious Victorian science and innovation programs

Do you know an outstanding international scientist or researcher considering joining our science and innovation communities? veski has opened an additional round of the 2013 veski innovation fellowships and is seeking applications in the fields of biotechnology, biomedical, advanced manufacturing, environmental technologies and the enabling sciences and technologies.

Are you aware of a leading Victorian who has made, or has the potential to make, a significant scientific discovery or technological innovation? Nominate them for a 2013 Victoria Prize for Science & Innovation valued at $50,000 in either the life or physical sciences.

Have you met an emerging scientist or researcher who would benefit from an overseas study mission grant? If so, encourage them to apply for a 2013 Victoria Fellowship valued at up to $18,000.

Student exchanges, international collaboration and Victoria's world class science infrastructure were all topics of conversation during a recent visit to Victoria by Professor Kai Wucherpfennig from Harvard. During his week-long visit, organised by veski innovation fellow Dr Matt Call with the support of a veski award in science, he participated in a veski conversation, delivered a science seminar at WEHI, and filmed a pilot for the inspiring students (and teachers) program. He also visited, and was extremely impressed by, some of Victoria's world-class science infrastructure, and was a special guest at the Melbourne Boston Sister Cities Gala Dinner. ... read more

veski programs deliver benefits for three regional schools
Three regional schools benefit from veski's new program

Over the next three years veski will deliver an inspiring students (and teachers) program providing professional development for science teachers and introducing students to a range of unique real world science experiences. With the support of the veski alliance, a new group drawing in the veski family and other Victorian scientists and innovators, veski will deliver activities for students and teachers to encourage more students to continue science through school and into university.

Science teachers and principals from Neerim District, Mooroopna and Kyneton secondary colleges, the three regional schools involved in the pilot, have attended an initial briefing and expressed great enthusiasm for the program. Since that meeting, veski has visited each of the schools and toured their science facilities, which will be upgraded in coming months thanks to additional funding from the Victorian Government.
