Last Outdoor Market!
This Saturday, 8 to 1 PM
63rd & Wornall Rd.
Dearest Eaters-

Wow! The season has flown by. So much has happened this year, so much has grown, and so much has been gobbled up!! Now we come to my favorite time of year: sweet potatoes, watermelon radishes, and the slow dissent into winter (which means shorter days for the farmer).

This Saturday is our LAST outdoor market for the season before we head indoors for the Winter Market. It's gonna be a great day full of bountiful market tables and "veggie trick-or-treat" for the kiddos. Bring your little ones in costume to parade around the market and collect a healthful treat from each vendor. Percy is going as a scary skeleton man, and Sol will be dressed as a garden pest. Here's a preview (without the body suit):
We'll be debuting our famous "Bonita" WHITE SWEET POTATOES pictured above. They have a rich, dry flesh that reminds me of roasted marshmallows. Stellar!! Orange-fleshed sweet potatoes will be in no shortage and we'll also be toting the much coveted Watermelon Radish, along with her root-rageous relatives: Purple Daikons, Black Spanish Radishes, and Gold Ball Turnips. Luscious Leeks and gourmet SPUDS will be abundant, but Pastured Eggs are limited. So come early for golden yolks!

In the Pork Dept. we are running quite low. The hog harvest happens soon (such an emotional time!!) and we'll be fully stocked with artisan cuts by Nov. 23rd, just in time for Thanksgiving. For now, we are toting endless tubs of SILKY LARD. Oh so delicious and healthier than butter!! What better than a local, pasture-raised, organic-fed fat? We've got Leaf Lard for cookies, pie crusts and pastries as well as regular Lard for all your savory cooking needs. We eat vegetarian most of the time, but I gotta tell ya, I fry my homemade veggie burgers in freakin' delicious!! I must be the only person on the planet who does that. Then again, we must be the only vegetarian veggie farmers turned pork producers too!! I love defying stereotypes...

Now, before you get overwhelmed with the anxieties of life, MARK YOUR CALENDARS for the Winter Market Season. We've got one hell of a line-up this year. So many new farmers, so many food artisans, so many cool vendors. Let's make them want to come back next year by supporting them each & every week. It's hard to make a winter market work. We need dedicated eaters LIKE YOU! But hey, it shouldn't take much convincing. Who doesn't want local produce, mushrooms, meats, eggs, ferments, and fresh food in the dead of winter? Yeah! Double Yeah!!

Big Green News:

Our City-wide Compost Program reopened this past Saturday after being closed for nearly 5 months. As most of you know, our expensive dump trailer was stolen from the property with 7000 pounds of rotting food scraps in it! It took us many months to raise funds and retool, but finally, we are at the finish line and KC once again has access to a FREE program that accepts all food scraps including meat & dairy. Move over trash cans, URBAVORE is back in action!

Farmer Dan and I are wholly passionate about diverting food waste from the landfill. So passionate in fact, that good ol' Farmer Dan has been busting his butt to get the program off the ground despite a BROKEN RIB and a very full farming schedule. Thanks Farmers Dan. You rock!!

And another big thank you to our gracious DONORS. We raised over $8000 dollars to replace the compost dumpster, raise the sides and install doors, implement greater security measures, and improve the parking lot for our users. Take a look at this beauty! Every penny donated plays an integral role in curbing climate change. How cool is that...
We are still accepting donations through our GoFundMe Campaign. We haven't quite reached our goal and the program is continually taxing on me and Dan. It costs money to operate and takes LOTS of time to manage. We appreciate small donations from those who use this free program frequently.
Last but not least: Pumpkin SMASHING!

Many of you couldn't make it to our big Farm Tour a few weeks back. Well, you've got another opportunity to come out and enjoy the fresh air! We'll be co-hosting a Pumpkin Smashing Party with Compost Collective KC on Sunday, Nov. 10th from 2 - 5 PM.

Let's face it, your old Halloween pumpkins don't belong in the landfill. They should be composted, or better yet, fed to URBAVORE's band of hungry hungry hogs!! Sorry, no hippos...

You'll get the chance to let out some pent up aggression by smashing the heck out of your pumpkins and watching the hogs go wild.

Big Rip Brewing Co. will provide craft beer and we'll have cider from KC Cider Co. (bring your own cup!!).

I gotta say, the hogs are pretty excited for this event and Sol has been practicing his smashing technique with a rubber sledge hammer:
Alright, I think that about does it. Too many updates!! I think I need a recap. Here's what we covered:
  • Last Outdoor Market This Saturday!
  • Winter Market starts at our indoor location Nov. 2nd
  • Our City-Wide Residential Compost Program has Reopened!!
  • Pumpkin Smashing Party at URBAVORE on Nov. 10th
Hmmm. I wonder if I needed that big long email. Those bullet points work pretty well.

Fudge it! I'm no good at being succinct. See you Saturday!

Yours Truly,

Farmer Brooke & the URBAVORE Crew

P.S. I almost forgot...I MUST "shout-out" our 2019 apprentices: Jerica Beckman & Jay Jadick. These badass individuals have busted their butts all season long to aid in the production of the best tasting food in KC. Their season commitment is coming to an end. Wish them well as they go out into the world and make it a better place. Love those guys!!
