About Griffiss Institute

The Griffiss Institute (GI) was established in 2002, by the State of New York, as an independent 501(c)(3) entity governed by a Board of Directors. The primary role of the GI is to advocate and facilitate the co-operation of private industry, academia and government in developing solutions to critical cyber security problems.  Another prime role is to build upon technologies under development at the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) Information Directorate to further strengthen our nation's security.

By partnering AFRL with private industry and academia, the Griffiss Institute is able to facilitate and grow the technology base of the Upstate NY region. We are focused on providing an environment conducive to the growth of technology and ideas by creating a collaborative research environment accessible to AFRL, local business and academia with the expressed goals of fostering research leading to new solutions in information assurance and spinning out new business opportunities.

What is Technology Transfer?

Technology Transfer, sometimes called T2, is the process of transferring the skills, knowledge, technologies, methods and samples of manufacturing, and facilities to the private sector.

1. A federally funded lab develops a technology.
2. The technology is made available to the private sector.
3. Private technology companies further develop the technology.
4. Companies commercialize new products, processes, and applications.
5. The technology is provided for consumers.

STEM Summer Camps Underway

Commercialization Academy

AFRL/RI, as part of its STEM Outreach Program, once again held summer camp programs for students at Griffiss Institute.

While many camps involve horses or camping out, others are meant to keep kids' brains moving. These STEM camps are specifically related to science, technology, engineering and math. These summer camps provide opportunities for students to further their education beyond the classroom, and learn real skills that can be directly applied to STEM careers and education.

The following summer camps were offered for 2015:
    • Cyber Camp 2.0, Grades 8th – 12th
    • Engineering Camp I, Grades 6th – 8th
    • Arduino Camp, Grades 8th – 12th
    • Engineering Camp II, Grades 7th – 9th
    • LEGO Robotics Camp, Grades 5th – 8th

Visiting Faculty
Summer is an exciting season as the AFLF/RI Information Institute plays host to visiting professors. Many travel from out of state to work side-by-side with the Information Directorate scientists and engineers. This unique opportunity for members of academia and the Air Force to work together, advances the state-of-the-art in Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I) and the Cyber for the Air Force, Department of Defense and commercial applications. This government-university partnership promotes and expands research in information technology areas of interest to the Air Force.

This summer, the Information Institute welcomed 27 visiting faculty, graduate and undergraduate students to perform research with the staff of the Information Directorate. On Monday, June 15, and Wednesday, June 24, the visiting faculty presented their research proposals, and on Wednesday, July 22, the final Technical Off-Site Exercise took place at Delta Lake Inn.
Summer Internships
This summer, AFRL/RI hosted 41, and Griffiss Institute hosted seven summer interns. The Summer Internship Program at the Information Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory is a paid summer internship opportunity for students currently enrolled in an accredited college or university at the freshman level through PhD level to work on-site with AFRL researchers on a wide variety of research projects.

The majority of the students selected are majoring in technical fields such as Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mathematics and Physics. For basic information on the areas of research that the interns are working in, please view the
AFRL/RI Core Competencies.
