CMA JANUARY 2017 NEWSLETTER
Mission
The Colorado Montessori Association is a powerful voice for Montessori advocacy providing a forum for networking and professional growth in the Montessori community. It is a highly functioning, evolving professional organization, unified in its vision, respectful, purposeful and inclusive.
Dear CMA Members,

It is a great honor that I have been asked, nominated and voted in as your new President of CMA.  I accept with a great awareness of all that has been accomplished and all we have yet to do together.

I would like to introduce myself a little to you and hopefully get to know all of you better as well.

I believe my greatest strength in taking this position is my overwhelming love and passion of Montessori and the desire to CONNECT with the Colorado Montessori community.  But I am aware of my weaknesses as well and my location in the mountains means I don’t have the consistent touchstones that would allow me to know more of you in the vast Montessori network of Colorado.  I will continue to work hard to change that in order to provide strong leadership and open communication.

In 2004 I opened a small primary classroom named Mountain Montessori in Avon, CO as a 501c3 with a small group of inspiring parents.  We are in our 13th year and have since added a second primary classroom.  I still work as the lead teacher and director of our rural school.

I have 5 children ages 17-26 who all began their education in Montessori and have grown up in a Montessori home.  But as you can see, I am close to releasing my youngest child into the world of collegiate academia and this stage of my life has meant more time to pursue passion.

The isolation of the mountains can be paralyzing at times and I began to reach out to larger Montessori communities in 2009.  I decided to obtain my Masters in Education (AM2) from St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN.  This led me to presenting at various Montessori conferences across the U.S.  In 2011, I was invited to sit on the Montessori Educational Programs International (MEPI) Board of Directors.  MEPI fosters and generates authentic Montessori education by developing and offering programs to educate and certify Montessori professionals and provides continuing development and networking opportunities.  MEPI has training programs in the US, Egypt, Canada, Europe and Mexico.  You can imagine how much I learned about the universality of Montessori by being involved with this organization!  I still sit on the board of MEPI.

Although my Montessori world was growing, I still felt a disconnect with my own state due to my remote location.  I had also gone through the glass/chokables variance with the State and recognized that licensure was changing and I felt the state policy over-reach as a call to action.  I joined the CMA board at a time of true Montessori Movement.

A Montessori Movement?  YES!  So many amazing things are happening in the Montessori world – the Montessori Public Policy Initiative, the Montessori Leadership Collaborative, Teach-Montessori.org, Journal of Montessori Research etc.  All of which have one thing in common – working together as Montessorians.  Let’s make sure CMA is a consistent part of this latest Montessori Movement to provide the transformative power of Montessori to more children and communities, regardless of their background or economic status.

To help ensure a strong future for the Montessori Movement, CMA is holding our first conference April 29, 2017 at the Douglas County School District Montessori Charter School.  We will offer an opportunity to share information, create new relationships and affirm old ones, and enthusiasm to further our mission!

Our keynote speaker for this conference will be Barbara Coloroso, an internationally recognized speaker and author in the areas of parenting, teaching, school discipline, and non-violent conflict resolution and reconciliatory justice. She is an educational consultant for school districts, the medical and business community, the criminal justice system and other educational associations around the world. My favorite of her 5 International Bestsellers is Kids are Worth It – Giving Your Child the Gift of Inner Discipline.  It is my most frequent recommendation to parents who are working to align their parenting techniques at home with the discipline in the Montessori classroom.

Join me in giving Montessori a stronger voice!  I look forward to working with you!

Sincerely,

Martha Teien
President, CMA

Mountain Shadows Montessori School
Head of School

Head of School
Mountain Shadows Montessori School
Boulder, CO

Mountain Shadows Montessori School (MSMS), a premier Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) recognized school in Boulder, Colorado, is looking for a devoted and enthusiastic advocate of AMI education to be Head of School.

  • Are you passionate about AMI education?
  • Do you wish more families understood the benefits of an AMI education for their children?
  • Do you want to be a part of a team that is working to bring AMI education to as many children as possible in the greater Boulder Valley area?

If you answered yes to these questions, read on to find out how Mountain Shadows is the ideal place for you to lead an organization that is dedicated to nurturing the children in its care, providing the best education in Boulder Valley, and promoting the well-established benefits of an AMI education in the community.

Mountain Shadows Montessori School was founded in 1976 as a private, non-profit school focused on providing a comprehensive, accredited Montessori education. The school is situated in Boulder, Colorado on a beautiful 12-acre campus with stunning views of the Foothills and the snow-capped RockyMountains. From the 300+ days of sunshine to the nearly limitless outdoor activities, the school benefits from all that Colorado has to offer. The students have access to all of the natural, cultural and academic resources that abound in Boulder Valley. There are few places in the United States that provide so much opportunity to explore, grow and learn.

Mountain Shadows is looking for someone who will lead the school, partnering with the dedicated and competent faculty and staff, the Director of Operations, and the Board of Directors to achieve strategic goals and ensure that the students flourish and succeed. Specifically, you will be responsible for:

  • Mentoring and supporting development of the AMI-accredited faculty
  • Leading the marketing, recruitment and admissions processes at the school
  • Driving the school’s fund development program to support long-term strategic goals
  • Acting as the external face of the school
  • Promoting the benefits of an AMI education in the broader community.

Because the Board believes in the value of AMI pedagogical standards, the Mountain Shadows Head of School must be an AMI-trained educator or administrator with prior experience working at an AMI recognized school.

If you believe that you have the desired qualifications, are dedicated to upholding AMI standards, and possess the ambition to lead the growth of an established and respected school, please submit the following to headsearch@mountainshadows.org:

  • Your resume
  • An educational philosophy statement
  • A brief description of why you are the right person to lead Mountain Shadows
