Teaching Gratitude

Dear Montessori Community,

Colorado Montessori Association (CMA) is preparing to contact Colorado Department of Human Services Division of Early Care and Learning (DECL) to communicate issues that Montessori schools have in regard to the Colorado Child Care Regulations.  Board members are in the process of reviewing both 7.701 General Rules for Child Care Facilities, 7.702 Rules Regulating Child Care Centers (less than 24-hour care), and the Administrative Guide for 7.702.  Our goal is to meet with DECL with one voice but we need your help.  You see the more eyes reviewing this material the better.  If you would help us by communicating to CMA what you find to be the most frustrating about the regulations, we will carry that message to DECL.  

For example,
7.702.2 D Any center having a director assigned to a classroom shall have qualified and adequate staff, allowing the director or qualified staff the ability to attend to the duties of a director as they arise.

THE ISSUE:  As a small school, this is a tremendous hardship on our program.  Our director has always functioned as a lead teacher and director without having to hire another person just in case director duties arise.  In the Administrative guide under clarification the duties mentioned are "greeting and assisting visitors to the program, providing human resource management, supervision of program staff, responding to emergencies, addressing parental needs, compliance with regulations."  None of these listed duties has ever interfered with my ability to be in the classroom.  And the financial burden of hiring someone else would put us out of business.  

We realize there are many more issues, this is just an example of how it would help us to understand your specific problem with the regulations.  But knowing the actual code you are referring to is immensely helpful to us in formulating the list and in not misinterpreting your particular frustration.
