Note from Dr. Cannon

April 29, 2019

Dear Breton Downs Families,

Last Wednesday was Administrative Professionals’ Day and the Breton Downs staff and students spent the day thanking and celebrating Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Sheridan.  These two wonderful ladies are compassionate, thoughtful, and extremely hard working. Here are some comments our students shared about Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Sheridan:

  • Thank you for making me smile whenever I go into the office.

  • Thank you for giving me medicine and taking my temperature and calling my family when I need it.

  • Thank you for getting ice packs when someone comes down to the office.

  • Thank you for keeping us safe.  Thank you for keeping our teeth safe!  You’re so kind. Thank you for giving us sun.  You are our sunshine!

  • We love Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Sheridan because…

    • They together helped me 3 times in one day.

    • You helped me when I barfed.

    • They helped me when I had a bloody nose.

Please see the pictures below of these two wonderful women!

Warmest regards,

Student Placement

One of our most important tasks is preparing the class lists for next year.  I will meet with staff in May to begin student placements for the 2019-2020 school year.  To guide us in this important process, we will follow the East Grand Rapids Board of Education Policy #8040:

To the extent possible, students are assigned to specific classes, grade levels and teachers by the building Principal.  In making assignments, Principals may consider (with input from teachers and parent(s)/guardian(s) the following factors: (i) individual student needs; (ii) learning styles of students; (iii) teaching styles; (iv) gender ratio; (v) heterogeneous make-up of the class; (vi) class size; and (vii) special education needs.

I am interested in your input.  If you wish to contribute information about your child, please use the Student Placement Information Form that is attached here. Please do not request a specific teacher as many factors go into the placement decision and we have yearly changes in teaching assignments.

Kenward's Korner

I often have parents ask me for assistance for a child who lies.  For some of them, the lying has just started or for others it's something they have been dealing with for a long time.  Either way, it can be equally challenging and frustrating.  Check out this information from for some of the latest insight and strategies for dealing with this tricky behavior.

Until next time,
Mr .Kenward

Parent Meeting Announcement for First Lego League!

KDL and East Grand Rapids are looking to build interest in having a grade 4 and 5 First Lego Robotics team that would start in the Fall of 2019. As team members, students will code a Mindstorms robot to complete complex tasks, build mission puzzles with Lego around a given theme, and also research the science behind the theme (Photos Below!). If your daughter or son might be interested in participating, we will be hosting a May 15, 6:30 p.m. All-District Parent meeting at the Woodcliff Board of Education Room. At the meeting, we will provide a timeline for the fall season and provide volunteer information for parents.  ...Read More
