Principal's Message
Dear Wealthy Elementary Families,
Thank you to everyone who attended last Friday’s PTO Family Movie Night! We had a packed house to watch Minions: Rise of Gru. I am grateful to our PTO for organizing this annual event for our school community and thank you to our Student Leadership Team and family volunteers for selling snacks during the show!
February is Kindness Month
This week, we kick off Kindness Month with some Spirit Days! Throughout February, we will be participating in kindness activities here at school and also encourage students to perform random acts of kindness for others. Consider writing a letter to a veteran or nursing home resident, sending a thank you note to a special person, performing a chore at home without being asked, etc. If families have pictures to share of students’ random acts of kindness, please email them to me at callen@egrps.org. I look forward to seeing ‘kindness is magic’ in action! Below are the Spirit Week happenings for next week.
Spirit Week
-
Tuesday, January 31- Crazy for Kindness (Wear mismatched clothes)
-
Wednesday, February 1- Hats off for Kindness (Hat Day)
-
Thursday, February 2- Kindness Shines Bright (Wear bright colors)
-
Friday, February 3- Team Up for Kindness (Favorite team/East color)

PTO School Musical - Little Mermaid, Jr.

It is a fantastic community event and allows many of our students to shine in unique ways. We hope you’ll come be part of our world next week!
Harry Potter Read Aloud Opportunity
We are seeking additional readers for upcoming Harry Potter Read Alouds. Every Wednesday, from 11:40-12:05 p.m., students in grades 3, 4, and 5 are invited to the Learning Commons to hear Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone. If you’re interested in reading to our students, please click here to sign up. All wizards and muggles are encouraged to join us!
EGR Public Safety Update
East Grand Rapids Public Schools continues to partner with East Grand Rapids Department of Public Safety (EGRDPS) to support our students. Officer Troy Brown, current EGRDPS school liaison officer, and additional Public Safety officers often visit the school to spend time with students. You may even hear about these officers playing games at recess! Please ask your child about the Public Safety officers they see around the building and reiterate that they are another way that we ensure their safety each and every day.

This week, our schools are celebrating Kabookie Week and Spirit Week. “Kabookie” was the nickname of Jimmy Gerken, an East resident and then staff member with special needs. Jimmy was a friend to just about everyone he ever met. If you attended an East event any time in the 1970s, 1980s, or 1990s, you probably saw Jimmy. And if you were really lucky, you got to know him. One of Jimmy’s most famous quotes is his response to someone who was bullying him about his special needs: “That’s okay," Jimmy said. "I’ll still be your friend.” We’re celebrating kindness and friendship this week in honor of Jimmy. It’s a great week to be a good friend or make a new one.
This story WOOD TV produced will tell you more about Jimmy Gerken’s life and legacy.
