Principal's Message

Dear Wealthy Elementary Families,

Welcome to week two of the 2019-2020 school year! It was wonderful to welcome students back into the building and feel the excitement in our halls once again. The first week of school is an especially busy one as our teachers spend time modeling and sharing our TEAM expectations (Take Responsibility, Everyone Safe, Always Respectful, Make a Difference) for all areas of the school. These four expectations guide our actions in all we do here at Wealthy Elementary. To learn more about our TEAM expectations, please click here

I begin every year by completing playground tours with each kindergarten, first, and second grade classroom. We learn the different parts of the playground and how to to be TEAM leaders outside. We Take Responsibility by bringing all playground equipment back inside after recess, we keep Everyone Safe by sliding on our pockets, feet first, one at a time, we are Always Respectful to the adults on duty who are there to keep us safe, and we Make a Difference by inviting others to play. There are many other ways students can be TEAM leaders outside, so be sure to ask your child(ren) how they were a TEAM leader at recess each day. For third, fourth, and fifth grade students, the teachers and I run stations outside to teach various games that can be played including 4 Square, Lightning, Bug Tag, Football, Kickball, and more. It was a fun afternoon of learning and play!

Each year, the staff and I focus on an annual theme that guides our discussions with students. This year, we are thinking in greater depth on how to “Make a Difference”. We are threading the quote below into our discussions with students. On Fridays, students will hear an upbeat version of the song, “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” as their morning bell. I look forward to celebrating how our students Make a Difference for others throughout the school year!

Safety Reminders
In addition to learning classroom routines and school procedures during the first week, it is also important to review and remind our children of safety precautions. Please review these safety reminders with your child(ren):

  • I ask that all parents carefully review our specific information on drop-off, pick-up, and parking procedures here. Please do this annually to ensure the safety of our students.

  • Discuss a plan with your child(ren) for both before and after school.

  • Use crosswalks to cross streets when walking to and from school. Students are asked to utilize locations with crossing guards and safeties whenever possible.

  • Please click the following links to view videos made with the City of East Grand Rapids to educate on walking safety and biking safety. Teachers will also view these videos with students in the first weeks of school.

  • Wear helmets when riding bikes or scooters to school. These must be walked once on school property.

  • To ensure the safety of everyone, pets are not allowed on school property.

  • Students should line-up at their assigned door before school at 8:10 AM. Lines were recently painted to mark where each classroom should begin lining up. The students have practiced this, but your support with timing is helpful.

This year we are excited to grow our partnership with East Grand Rapids Public Safety. You may have noticed officers present around the exterior of the building during arrival and dismissal. Public Safety will continue to be present throughout the year to assist with safety procedures and to answer any questions students and parents may have. As a reminder to parents, our first bell rings at 8:15 a.m. and our doors will open for student entry only. Any student who arrives after 8:20 a.m. should enter the building through Door #1 by the Main Office.  Please do not knock on doors to ask our safeties or students to open them. They have been instructed not to open locked doors for anyone.

On September 4 and 5 Wealthy Elementary will be hosting our annual Parent Information Nights. Each grade level has a designated time on one of these evenings (listed on the Wealthy Elementary Calendar found here) for you to visit your child’s classroom and learn from his or her teacher what curriculum will be taught this year. In addition, you will learn other important information pertaining specifically to the classroom, ways you can support learning at home, and have the opportunity to have any questions answered. We look forward to having you join us next week. Please note that we do not have school this Friday or the following Monday for Labor Day weekend. I hope you enjoy the extended time with your family!

Warm Regards,

Carlye Allen

Would you like a break from cutting out tiny box tops? If so, download the Box Tops App. It is very easy to use! You simply open the app, scan your receipt within fourteen days of purchase, and all products with box tops will be applied to the Wealthy Elementary account that you have entered when setting up the app. Feel free to use either method. Wealthy Elementary has obtained new playground equipment, STEM materials, and classroom supplies using the money earned from Box Tops!
Free Piano!
Looking for a piano...for free? This piano is on the third floor near the music room. It needs some TLC (see photos above), but a professional piano tuner informed us that it is fixable! A couple of internal hammers are detached, and some keys need cosmetic repair, but what a great instrument for someone to learn to play tunes on! First come, first serve. You will need to be able to remove it from the building. Email Deanna in the office at if interested!
