Note from Dr. Cannon

March 25, 2019

Dear Breton Downs Families,

Whether your family is staying in Grand Rapids, MI or traveling outside of our state, please enjoy your spring break with family and friends. School will be closed starting on Friday, March 29 through Friday, April 5. School resumes again on Monday, April 8.

We have many lost and found items.  Please stop by the tables located outside the main office to see the gloves, sweatshirts, coats, and water bottles that need to be found.  We also have the lost and found items from Madagascar, Jr. Items that are not claimed by Thursday, March 28 will be donated.

Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, March 26. This is a wonderful time to discuss your child’s progress and areas of growth with the classroom teacher.

Students have completed their winter MAP testing sessions in Reading and Math. This assessment allows us to look at individualized growth as well as nationally normed data. The M-STEP state assessment begins after Spring Break based on windows of time determined by the state. Our M-STEP testing schedule is listed below.

 Fifth Grade

  • Thursday, April 11: English Language Arts

  • Tuesday, April 16: Mathematics

  • Tuesday, April 23: Social Studies

  • Thursday, April 25: Science

Fourth Grade

  • Thursday, May 16: English Language Arts

  • Tuesday, May 21: Mathematics

Third Grade

  • Wednesday, May 8: English Language Arts

  • Thursday, May 9: English Language Arts

  • Wednesday, May 15: Mathematics

Our students are well prepared for these assessments, and our goal is to foster a comfortable testing environment and schedule suitable to our students’ developmental needs. Please be mindful in scheduling any appointments for your student(s) by trying to avoid these times. This is important because time for make-up assessments is limited. Thank you, in advance, for your support.

 Warmest regards,

The Kent District Library (KDL), in partnership with East Grand Rapids Public Schools, will be running lunchtime Lego Robotics Build and Code Clubs starting this week! Your student will have an opportunity to learn more in their science classes prior to the kickoff events. KDL and East Grand Rapids are looking to build interest in having a grade 4 and 5 First Lego Robotics team

Parking Lot Reminder

As a reminder, parking lot B is not to be used as a pick up or drop off spot.  Cars should not be pulling into the parking lot to wait for students. With safety being our top priority, please remind your children to walk on the sidewalks and to not cut through the lot.  We appreciate your help with this matter.

Three things to do over spring break:

  1. Enjoy your time with family and friends.

  2. Nominate one or more of the outstanding teachers in our district for an Excellence in Teaching Award or the James and Georgia Nicholas Award.

Think about your three-year pledge to Now&Forever. More than 400 families have already pledged $5.47 million to help build the future of our schools. ...READ MORE
