Note from Dr. Cannon

February 4, 2019

Dear Breton Downs Families,

As we head into the month of February, it is important to review and remind our children of important safety precautions as they walk to and from school. Please take this opportunity to discuss safety procedures with your children, including:

Whenever possible, use a buddy system when walking to and from school.

• “No, Go, Yell, Tell” - Teach children to say no, run away, yell as loud as they can, and tell someone they trust right away if they think they are in a dangerous situation and not to worry about feeling embarrassed or hurting the other person’s feelings.

• Walk directly home from school and check in before going off to play with friends

Many resources on keeping children safe are available online that you may want to include in your discussions. One site that is appropriate for elementary students can be found here.

Remember, report any  suspicious activity directly to  the East Grand Rapids Public Safety Department immediately and, as always, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Yule Ball

The 7th Annual Interscholastic Yule Ball was held on Saturday, February 2 and our students had a fabulous time!!  A big thank you to Mrs. Rieth and Mr. Kenward for having the vision and energy to organize this event and for providing an experience our students will not forget.  Over 450 East Grand Rapids students attended the Yule Ball. This is a record number!   Click here for a video presented at the Yule Ball.

Breton Downs Elementary is hosting two EGR NOW&FOREVER informational events on Thursday, February 28 at 8:15- 9:15 am and 6:00- 7:00 pm.  We encourage all our families to come hear about this historic effort to raise a sustainable source of funding for critical programs, supports and enhancements for our schools.

MAP Language Usage Assessment

After thoughtful consideration and analysis, East Grand Rapids Public Schools has discontinued the Language Usage section of the MAP starting with the upcoming February testing window. For that reason, you will see Language Usage test scores for your child through the fall 2019 administration, but not for the Winter 2019 administration or going forward.

Upcoming Events at Breton Downs:

No school on Monday, February 18 and Tuesday, February 19 - Winter Break

Warmest regards,
