Note from Dr. Cannon

February 25, 2019

Dear Breton Downs Families,

When some people hear the phrase, March Madness, they think about the college basketball tournament that occurs every March and names a national champion at the end.  When you are in an elementary building, March Madness has a different meaning.  March Book Madness is an international program where a tournament bracket competition is set up between books. Students have the ability to vote for the book that they think should win the different matchups. Students, classrooms and libraries from as close as down the hallway, to elementary buildings in EGR, to as far away as Kuala Lumpur participate in March Book Madness.  The games will be decided by a simple vote on a Google Form (the forms do not collect any personal data). Students vote individually or you can have a class vote. After each round of voting the bracket will be updated and the next round of voting will begin. The one week voting cycles will still be in place and the overall champions will be decided near the date of the NCAA Basketball finals.

At Breton Downs Elementary we kicked off our March Book Madness tournament with an all-school assembly on February 21 announcing the matchups between books. Here is a video of our assembly.

To continue with the enthusiasm, next week we will have a children’s librarian, Ms. Sarah, from the Kent District Library read two of the picture books to our students.  Please ask your child(ren) about March Book Madness and which picture book they hope wins! A big thank you to the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation for funding the March Book Madness requests! We all appreciate your support!

General Parent Safety Reminders

I would like to remind parents of some of the procedures that are in place to ensure student safety on our grounds.

  • Please exercise caution and patience as you navigate during drop-off and pick-up times as these are the busiest of our day.

  • Always have students exit a vehicle on the right side of the car, directly to a curb.  Students should not be walking across the front, circular drive.

  • Students should walk on the sidewalks and not through parking lots.

  • Cars should never be left unattended on the curb or in the front circle drive and should only be parked in marked spaces.

  • All doors are locked at 8:20 a.m.  Students arriving after 8:20 a.m should enter door #1. Please do not knock on a locked door or ask a student to open a locked door.

  • After school, students must check in at home before returning to school grounds to play. Students must be supervised by an adult.

  • Before parents can volunteer in the classroom or drive on a field trip, a volunteer consent form must be completed.

  • Volunteers must wear their Volunteer IDs (housed in the office, delivered upon sign in, and returned upon sign out).

Playground

With the snow and rain last week, our playground is filled with lots of wet areas. Please have your child pack and extra pair of socks and/or pants in his/her backpack.  These can come in handy during this time of year.

Warmest regards,

Caroline

4th Grade Mini-Market

Please come support our young entrepreneurs and do a little shopping!

Breton Downs’ fourth graders are testing their skills at marketing as they embark on business ventures that will offer a variety of products and services.  Students are gaining hands-on experience with concepts such as production, advertising, competition, supply and demand, and profit. Students will be running their Mini-Market Friday, March 1st  in the afternoon.  All Breton Downs students are asked to bring a small amount of money to shop at scheduled times throughout the afternoon, and parents and adults are invited to shop between 2:20-2:50. Items will be priced between $0.25 and $3.00, so please consider sending your child to school with a handful of quarters. If you are available, plan on checking out fourth graders’ businesses in the gym Friday, March 1st from 2:20 – 2:50 and support our students’ enterprises!
