Principal's Message

Dear Wealthy Elementary Families,

In this final week of the semester, I want to take a moment to thank the Wealthy Elementary community for a wonderful first half of the school year. We have created many memories and accomplished a great deal of learning in these past few months together. I am grateful for the academic and social emotional growth that has occurred throughout classroom experiences, field trips, and student activities as well as the returned opportunities for volunteers, performances, and in-person events. I hope that Winter Break is a time for each of you to spend enjoying the company of family and loved ones. After this full week of school, the staff and I look forward to seeing everyone back for the start of the second semester on Tuesday, January 3!

First Semester Report Cards
We are approaching the end of the semester and teachers are already beginning to prepare for reporting student progress. First semester report cards for all K-5 students will be available in Skyward at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, January 6.

Gingerbread Buddies and Kids’ Food Basket Collection
Last Friday was a busy day at Wealthy Elementary! Our kindergarten students enjoyed Gingerbread Buddy Day and our Student Leadership Team loaded up all the completed Sack Suppers we packed for Kids’ Food Basket. As a school, we packed over 1,300 Sack Suppers and donated many additional food items. In total, we donated 881 pounds of food…wow! Thank you to the Student Leadership Team for organizing this event and all of our families for helping us support children in the Grand Rapids community suffering from food insecurity. Together, we Make a Difference!

Winter Showcase
Last Friday our students, under the direction of Ms. Pugia, performed a wintry set of songs for staff, students, and families during the Winter Showcase. Thank you to all who were able to join us! Here is the slideshow presentation to share a little of what your child(ren) has been learning in ther Specials classes (Art, Music, P.E., and Spanish). Thank you to our Specials teachers for all of their great work each week with students!

First Lego League Challenge (Grades 3-5) State Competition Results
This past Saturday, two First Lego League (FLL) Challenge teams from East Grand Rapids, the Lakeside Lego Lions and Wealthy Elementary Team Power Up, competed in the state competition in Mason, MI. Both teams did an outstanding job showcasing all they had learned throughout the season! At the competition, the Lakeside Lego Lions scored their personal best on the robot game and also presented their innovation project focused on solar energy. The Wealthy Elementary Team Power Up placed in the top half of teams in the state and received the “Breakthrough Award” for wonderful teamwork and demonstration of the FLL Core Values. Congratulations to these two teams for qualifying for the post season and thank you to their parent coaches for all of the learning and leadership they provided! Information regarding how to sign up for the next season of FLL will be shared through each elementary newsletter this spring.

Thank You from the Children’s Healing Center
During the Hearts of Gold campaign this past October, a generous gift was made to the
Children’s Healing Center. Thank you East Grand Rapids for giving the gift of play! Your support of the Children’s Healing Center through Hearts of Gold is breaking down the barriers of isolation for kids and families who are shut off to the world because of a life-limiting disease. It’s the generous community -people like you- who make it possible for us to provide Good. Clean. Fun. Thank you!
