Principal's Message
Dear Wealthy Elementary Families,
Happy Halloween! Thank you to everyone who supported and attended our celebrations today! Having the opportunity to parade in their costumes is a favorite activity for many of our students. The costume creativity was impressive! The staff enjoyed wearing our various sea creature costumes in honor of this year’s musical, The Little Mermaid, Jr. We know many parents took wonderful photos, and we ask you to share them with us by emailing them to wizardyearbookpics@gmail.com. Please include “Halloween” in the Subject line as well as the name of the teacher. All photos go through a review process before being posted, so it does take time before they are available for public viewing. Thank you for joining us on this occasion and I hope your family enjoys trick-or-treating if you head out tonight!

October was a very busy month at Wealthy Elementary! Thank you for attending Fall Conferences the past two weeks. These meetings are an important time to discuss your child(ren)’s progress and maintain open lines of communication between home and school. Students and staff also enjoyed a visit from author Matthew Cordell last week. He read some of his book, Cornbread and Poppy and did a draw along with each grade level. Thank you to the Friends of the East Grand Rapids Library for supporting this visit as well as the Wealthy Elementary PTO for purchasing some of Mr. Cordell’s books for our classrooms!

Veterans Day Assembly on November 11
Next Friday, November 11, we will hold our annual Veterans Day Assembly. Wealthy Elementary School invites all relatives and friends of our school community who have served or are serving in the United States military to join us on November 11 at 2:15 p.m. for a welcome led by our Student Leadership Team. In order to plan for the welcome, please click here to RSVP by this Friday, November 4. This year, we will focus on women in service. Thank you to Mrs. Griffith and Mrs. Eggert for working with the Student Leadership Team to plan our assembly and to Ms. Pugia and the students for preparing some beautiful songs to commemorate the occasion. Students and staff are planning to wear red, white, and blue on Friday, November 11 to honor our Veterans.
We will once again include a picture slideshow of family members who have served in the armed forces. If you have submitted a picture in the past, it will remain in our slideshow and does not need to be resubmitted. We welcome any new additions! Please send pictures including the name of the person, branch in which he/she served, and the relation to our Wealthy Wizard to my email, callen@egrps.org, by this Friday, November 4, 2022.
Lunchroom Update
This year, we have noticed many students requesting to use a microwave in the lunchroom. We are unable to provide microwaves for the use of heating student food. Microwaves require constant staff supervision to ensure student safety and cleanliness. When a student utilizes the microwave this removes staff from their supervision duties and also shortens the amount of time students have to eat. Thank you for your flexibility in sending cold lunches with your child(ren) that do not require the microwave. We appreciate your support.

Last week, the Foundation Former Board Member Breakfast featured a presentation about the classroom Tower Gardens that enable kids to learn about biology, chemistry, ecology, and more in a fun, hands-on way. Current and former Foundation board members saw videos from middle school science teacher Becky Martin and her students as well as Breton Downs fourth grade teacher Cheryl Radecki and her students. The audience was also treated to a live, in-person presentation by Wealthy fifth grade teacher Megan Miller (herself a former Foundation board member) and three of her students: Mara Catlin, Wynn Stein, and Stella Chung. It's wonderful to see how today's students and our former board members, some separated by 80 years of age, share the same enthusiasm for learning.

Volunteer Consent Form
In order to volunteer in our school buildings or school-sponsored events, EGRPS has a process that requires volunteers to complete a background check. If you have not completed the Volunteer Consent Form via registration through Skyward, click here to do so. This form is not available in the office and must be completed online. It is recommended that volunteers complete this form as far in advance as possible to ensure the background check process can be completed prior to the date of volunteering. The completion of this fillable form online ensures that a badge will be in the office for you to wear when you check in as a school volunteer. It is required that this form is filled out each year. To best support the students and staff as a volunteer, refrain from bringing younger siblings with you when serving in a volunteer role.
Volunteers: Driving Students on Field Trips
In order for any parent/guardian/volunteer to drive students on a field trip, they must have an approved volunteer consent form on file that includes submission of a driver’s license and an unrestricted driving record.
Please note: Regardless of when an incident occurred, if a driving record includes any of the following citations or violations, the volunteer will be restricted from driving: alcohol or drug-related charges, points, excessive speeding, reckless driving, etc. If a driving record contains any of the above listed citations, you will receive an email notifying you that you are restricted from driving students other than your own.
Additionally, individuals with an out-of-state driver’s license are unable to be approved for transporting any students other than their own as we are not able to complete a full background check without a Michigan driver’s license.
We appreciate your understanding and patience as we review, consider, and ensure the safety of our students.
