Note from Dr. Cannon

April 22, 2019

Dear Breton Downs Families,

Last week was National Volunteer Week and it is a time to thank all the thousands of volunteers across the country who keep many organizations running, communities safe and provide the services that otherwise would not exist without volunteers.  I would like to thanks the many Breton Downs parents and the PTO for their ongoing support of our school. From working running club, to attending field trips, to cutting out laminated letters of the alphabet, we couldn’t do the many things at Breton Downs without our volunteers.  THANK YOU!!!

Below are pictures of some of the supports from the Breton Downs PTO including purchasing indoor recess supplies for our classrooms and author visit Mrs. Denise Brennan-Nelson.

Warmest regards,

Caroline

Student Placement

One of our most important tasks is preparing the class lists for next year.  I will meet with staff in May to begin student placements for the 2019-2020 school year.  To guide us in this important process, we will follow the East Grand Rapids Board of Education Policy #8040:

To the extent possible, students are assigned to specific classes, grade levels and teachers by the building Principal.  In making assignments, Principals may consider (with input from teachers and parent(s)/guardian(s) the following factors: (i) individual student needs; (ii) learning styles of students; (iii) teaching styles; (iv) gender ratio; (v) heterogeneous make-up of the class; (vi) class size; and (vii) special education needs.

I am interested in your input.  If you wish to contribute information about your child, please use the Student Placement Information Form that is attached here. Please do not request a specific teacher as many factors go into the placement decision and we have yearly changes in teaching assignments.

M-STEP Testing Dates

Breton Downs Elementary will administer the M-STEP according to the schedule below. Please be mindful in scheduling any appointments for your student(s) that involves time out of the classroom during the assessment administration days.

May 7 Election Information

The May 7, 2019, election ballot will have an important item for your consideration, the renewal of the Non-Homestead Operating Millage. This millage is a portion of the per-pupil state foundation allowance and provides significant operational funding for the district. For important information about this ballot issue, please click here.

Kenward's Korner

I often have parents ask me for assistance for a child who lies.  For some of them, the lying has just started or for others it's something they have been dealing with for a long time.  Either way, it can be equally challenging and frustrating.  Check out this information from Childmind.org for some of the latest insight and strategies for dealing with this tricky behavior.

Until next time,
Mr .Kenward

Parent Meeting Announcement for First Lego League!

KDL and East Grand Rapids are looking to build interest in having a grade 4 and 5 First Lego Robotics team that would start in the Fall of 2019. As team members, students will code a Mindstorms robot to complete complex tasks, build mission puzzles with Lego around a given theme, and also research the science behind the theme (Photos Below!). If your daughter or son might be interested in participating, we will be hosting a May 15, 6:30 p.m. All-District Parent meeting at the Woodcliff Board of Education Room. At the meeting, we will provide a timeline for the fall season and provide volunteer information for parents.  ...Read More

WATCH YOUR MAIL FOR AN IMPORTANT LETTER ABOUT NOW&FOREVER

Confession: Most of the mail I get, I carry from the mailbox to the recycling box without even looking at it.

Later this week, though, there’s going to be something important in your mail. It’s a letter about Now&Forever, the EGR Schools Foundation’s campaign to build a sustainable future for our schools.  ...READ MORE
