Principal's Message

The staff at East Grand Rapids Middle School is extremely grateful for the generosity and support that our students receive from our school community throughout the year. In this season of thanksgiving, we want to express our gratitude!

Teachers and staff have graciously requested that in lieu of holiday gifts, students instead donate to families and students in need in our school community. A number of families and students are struggling because of health issues, job loss, or other situations out of their control. Over the past 15 years, EGRMS families have helped raise money and donate personal items for families and students in need at the middle school. Last year the community graciously donated $4,680 in gift certificates, cash, food, and toiletry items. Some of the items families were able to purchase or pay for were new tires, winter clothing, utility bills, holiday presents for their children, food, mortgage/rent payments, health care, and personal care items. These donations will remain in the EGR school community with 100% of the money benefiting middle school students and families.

Please consider giving to the EGRMS fund for families and students in need as an alternative to staff gifts. In honor of your child’s teachers, please consider one of the following:

  • A cash/check donation payable to “EGRMS PTO”
  • A gift card
  • Toiletries
If you would like to participate:
  • Please put your child’s name and the teacher’s name who the donation is made in honor of on an envelope attached to your donation.
  • Items may be dropped off in the Guidance Office.
  • We will notify the teachers in writing of your contribution.

All contributions are valuable, and your kindness is very much appreciated by families and children in need this holiday season. Any questions may be directed to Lisa Healey, Counselor, at 235-4866 or lhealey@egrps.org.

Happy Holidays!
The EGR Middle School Staff

Dear EGRMS Families:

It is with very mixed emotions that I post my final newsletter message.  It seems quite surreal that I am retiring tomorrow. It has been a tremendous journey and I am deeply thankful for all of the families that have enriched my career here at East Grand Rapids Middle School.

I have been blessed to spend my entire career here, including student teaching!  I walk away with a heavy, yet very full, heart.

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season.

With my deepest gratitude,

Shelly

EGRMS Student Council

Several male faculty members have started growing mustaches for a Gilda's Club fundraiser sponsored by EGRMS Student Council.  Students are encouraged to vote for the best mustache by bringing in spare change.  Students can vote with their change at lunch.  The teacher who raises the most "votes" with money, will be crowned Mr. Mustache. Voting will start Monday, November 18th and continue until December 6th.  Last year students raised $460 to support Gilda's Club.  Our goal this year is $500.

THANK YOU, EAST GRAND RAPIDS FAMILIES!

It’s Thanksgiving week, and we have a lot to be thankful for.

We’re thankful for the more than 900 families who donated to Now&Forever, enabling us to raise more than $6.4 million in cash pledges to build the future of our schools. We’re thankful for the more than one hundred volunteers who give their time to Foundation projects and events throughout the year. We’re thankful for the teachers, administrators and staff who make the most of the programs and enhancements the Foundation provides. We’re thankful for our board members who devote their energy and insight to guiding our efforts to where they will do the most good. Mostly, we’re thankful that we live in a community that values public education and is willing to do whatever it takes to help our students and our schools succeed.

Thank you, East Grand Rapids! Together, we’re investing in the future, and the future belongs to Pioneers.

East Grand Rapids High School student leaders formed a chapter of Girl Up in the 2018-2019 school year. Girl Up was founded by the United Nations Foundation in 2010 and is a powerful avenue for our young women to join together working towards gender equality worldwide.

Girl Up is facilitating a period product drive November 18-26 with the intention to provide products in the middle school female bathrooms. (Our high school students remember how difficult it can be to ask a peer/teacher for a feminine product in middle school.) Girl Up is hoping to collect tampons and pads. If you would like to donate, there will be a box in the MS main office. Thank you for considering!
