Note from Dr. Cannon
September 6 2022
Dear Breton Downs Families,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day weekend and enjoyed both the warmer and cooler temperatures. I always appreciate the cooler days and being able to sit around a bonfire eating smores. This is probably one of the best parts of living in Michigan!
Last Thursday the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation stopped at Breton Downs and awarded two staff members, Katie Vicente and Marissa Lehman, their grant requests. Mrs. Vicente received over $2,400 to take our 5th grade students to the Celebration of Souls Exhibit in downtown Grand Rapids and Mrs. Lehman received $1,400 for ipads to use with her speech and language students. Our students liked being able to participate in the celebration with their teachers. Thank you to the EGRSF!! You can learn more about the Foundation and support its mission at egrsf.org.

Throughout the year the staff and I will take photos of our wonderful Bulldogs. We encourage parents to do the same when joining us for school events. You can share pictures in this google folder. Some of these pictures will be included in our end of the year slideshow and/or the Breton Downs Yearbook.
Parent/Guardian Information Night
On September 7 and 8 Breton Downs is hosting our annual Parent/Guardian Information Nights. Each grade level has a designated time on one of these evenings (listed below) for you to visit your child’s classroom and learn from his or her teacher what curriculum will be taught this year. In addition, you will learn other important information pertaining specifically to the classroom, ways you can support learning at home, and have the opportunity to have any questions answered. We look forward to having you join us!
Wednesday, September 7 Kindergarten 5:15- 6:00 p.m.
First Grade 6:00- 6:45 p.m.
Second Grade 6:45- 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, September 8 Third Grade 5:15- 6:00 p.m.
Fourth Grade 6:00- 6:45 p.m.
Fifth Grade 6:45- 7:30 p.m.
Volunteering and Field Trips
Prior to volunteering in the buildings, volunteers must fill out an annual Consent Form to perform a background check and be approved in order to work with students. This process takes time, so we ask all interested volunteers to complete this online form well in advance of volunteering, including prior to attending field trips. Classroom teachers will be in touch regarding field trip fees and when they will be available via SchoolPay. Checks may also be dropped off in the office once fees are determined.
Homecoming Parade on Friday, October 7
The East Grand Rapids High School Homecoming Parade will take place on Friday, October 7, 2022, beginning at 4:30 p.m. EGRHS would like to welcome all our elementary/middle school groups who are interested to participate. Your group will need to be chaperoned along the route. All parade participants should gather on Beechwood at 3:45 p.m. Your group will need to make signs or wear team "uniforms" to help our crowds know who your group is celebrating.
If your group would like to participate in the parade, please let Heather McKinney, EGRHS Assistant Principal, know no later than Friday, September 23, 2022, by emailing her at hmckinne@egrps.org.
New Staff
Once again we will be highlighting staff members in our Breton Beat. In today’s newsletter you will find information about Mrs. Sarah Young, one of our new first grade teachers and returning school social worker, Mrs. Erin Huffer.
