Note from Dr. Cannon

May 20, 2019

Dear Breton Downs Families,

On Thursday, May 23, 2019, in the afternoon we are having a Haitian Day at Breton Downs Elementary. As in year’s past, we are asking our students to walk to school and to wear a yellow shirt and dark shorts/pants to mirror the uniforms our friends wear at the Power of Education Foundation School in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Our 5th grade students will be working with classes in the afternoon to celebrate the joy of play and how it links kids all over the world.  We will also have a donation jar in the office for students who would like to contribute to the Power of Education Foundation.

Students will have the option of purchasing a Haitian lunch that will include chicken nuggets, romaine salad, red beans and rice, and fruit sorbet. Students and staff will work throughout the day with limited electricity and technology.  Our students will be given the same supplies students use at the Power of Education Foundation School: pencil, paper, and share a small whiteboard. We had a Haiti Day at Breton Downs last year and it was a big success with our students and staff.

Here are some of the events happening in the months of May and June:

  • Thursday, May 23- Haiti Day in the afternoon

  • Monday, May 27- Memorial Day, No School

  • Thursday, May 30- End of the Year Assembly at 12:30 p.m.

  • Thursday, May 30- Field Day,  immediately following assembly

  • Friday, May 31 - Science Fair from 12:30-3:00 p.m.

  • Thursday, June 6- Last Day of School ½ day; Flag Lowering Ceremony at 11:10 a.m.

 Warmest regards,

 Caroline

Kenward's Korner

I often have parents ask me for assistance for a child who lies.  For some of them, the lying has just started or for others it's something they have been dealing with for a long time.  Either way, it can be equally challenging and frustrating.  Check out this information from Childmind.org for some of the latest insight and strategies for dealing with this tricky behavior.

Until next time,
Mr .Kenward

Volunteers Needed

The PTO board is currently looking for volunteers to lead the following committees next year:

Gardening Committee:  Round up a group of volunteers to help clean up the flower beds!  The gardening committee can meet anytime in early August to make the front of the building look fantastic!  Spring clean up is as needed. This year is our year to mulch...no need to worry about ordering or delivery the PTO will do all that.  Just show up to help spread!

Staff Appreciation Treats:  Our staff does so much for our Bulldogs throughout the year that we want to continuously show our appreciation!  Help us put together a team who will bring treats to the staff lounge once a month and stock the fridge with their favorite drinks.  One committee chair needed to set up a sign up genius for monthly volunteers.

Variety Show:  Leaders needed to help put together and facilitate a avaning of talent.  This event typically takes place in mid-November. The team would coordinate acts, collect and review music and help students practice and move on and off stage.  Event takes place in the evening at the Breton gym.

If you are interested in any of these committees and would like to help lead these groups, please contact Magda VanWingen at mvw2010@outlook.com.
