Note from Dr. Cannon
August 26, 2019
Dear Breton Downs Families,
Welcome Back! I hope you and your family had a wonderful summer vacation. It was nice to have everyone back in the building and to feel the excitement of another school year. The first month of school is busy as students spend time learning classroom and school routines, procedures, and expectations inside and outside of our building. Last week the paraeducators and I conducted our annual “recess walks” and we discussed expectations on our playground and also ways to engage in different activities and games. We finished the week with the Breton Downs Carnival sponsored by the PTO. Our students, staff, and parents had a great time. Please see the pictures below. What a great first week of school!
In addition to learning classroom routines and school procedures, it is also important to review and remind our children of safety precautions. Please review these safety reminders with your child(ren):
Remember to always try and walk with other students on the way to school and home.
Please cross at intersections that have our safeties or crossing guards. Adult crossing guards will be located on the corners of Boston/York and Boston/Breton from 7:50- 8:20 a.m. and 3:15- 3:45 p.m. to help our students cross these streets safely.
Students should not be walking across parking lots. Please use the sidewalks.
Students should line-up at their assigned door before school at 8:10 a.m.
It is important to wear a helmet if you are riding your bike or scooter.
When on school property, please walk your bike or scooter.
Remember to always look both ways before crossing a street.
Never approach a car that you don’t recognize and never go with a stranger or accept anything from a stranger.
Please click the following links to view videos made with the City of East Grand Rapids to educate on walking safety and biking safety.
As a reminder to parents, our first bell rings at 8:15 a.m. and students will be entering the building at this time. Any student who arrives after this time should enter the building through door #1. Please do not knock on doors to ask our safeties or students to open them. They have been instructed not to open locked doors to anyone. Also, we ask parents not to pull in or park in our back parking lot located near the tennis courts before school or after school. We want to keep all of our students safe.
We all love our pets, but they do not belong at school. Too many young children are allergic or frightened by them. When walking your child to school or picking up your child after school, please do not bring your dog onto school property.
Once again, we will be highlighting staff members in our Breton Beat. In today’s newsletter you will find information about our music teacher, Mrs. Emily Mills here.
On September 4 and 5 Breton Downs Elementary will be hosting our annual Parent Information Nights. Each grade level has a designated time on one of these evenings (listed below) for you to visit your child’s classroom and learn from his or her teacher what curriculum will be taught this year. In addition, you will learn other important information pertaining specifically to the classroom, ways you can support learning at home, and have the opportunity to have your questions answered. We look forward to having you join us next week. I wish all of you a fantastic week enjoying friends and family over the upcoming holiday weekend.
