Note from Dr. Cannon

June 3, 2019

Dear Breton Downs Families,

As the 2018-2019 school year comes to an end this Thursday, I want to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have made this year so memorable. We have much to be proud of at Breton Downs Elementary. First, my sincere appreciation and thanks to the parents and the PTO for your continued dedication and support of Breton Downs and our students. The partnership between school and home is extremely important and you provide us with support inside and outside of the classroom. Next, please join me in thanking our staff for their commitment, dedication, and care of our students.  They are passionate about providing students with exceptional learning opportunities that support the development of the whole child. Finally, I want to thank our Breton Downs students for their enthusiasm and bright smiles. Our students come to school each day with kind, caring, and respectful behavior and are eager and excited to learn. I often say I have the best job in the whole world and I feel very fortunate to be the principal of such a fine school. Thank you for making Breton Downs Elementary such a wonderful place!

Field Day- Tuesday, June 4

Tomorrow, Tuesday, June 4, in the afternoon we will be having Field Day at Breton Downs.  Our students are eager and excited about this fun-filled day. Mrs. Wagenmaker and our 5th grade students have been working together to plan many games and activities. Please see the information below for Field Day.

  • Shoes:  All students must wear tennis shoes to protect their feet during the variety of activities. No sandals or flip-flops please.

  • Clothing: Please ensure your child is dressed for approximately 3 hours outside, especially if the weather is hot. Students will participate in several games involving water, but none of these are designed for students to get soaked.

  • Sunscreen: If you would like your child to wear sunscreen, please apply it at home prior to coming to school.

  • Students should come to school with a filled water bottle.  They can also wear hats at Field Day.

Last Day of School- Thursday, June 6 (½ day)

Our last day of school is on Thursday, June 6, 2019.  It is a ½ day and students will be dismissed at 11:24 a.m.  We will be having our Flag Lowering Ceremony at 11:10 a.m. Parents and community members are welcome to attend to sing the Breton Fight Song one more time before summer vacation starts.

Dates for the 2019-2020 School Year

As we prepare for the 2019-2020 school year, I have shared information regarding fall registration and events. The back-to-school communication may be found here.

Enjoy your summer with family and friends!  I will see everyone again on Monday, August 19 for the start of the 2019-2020 school year!

Warmest regards,

Note from Mrs. Boersma

As summer approaches, we are all filled with excitement of all the possibilities that longer days, warmer weather, time with family and friends can bring!  We also find ourselves reflecting on the school year that has passed, the ups, the downs, big events, friends made and amazing teachers who guided us through it all.  I have been absent from Breton this year and have dearly missed the hustle and bustle of each day.  As your year comes to an end,  I want to thank you all  for so many things;  Thank you for taking care of my family when we needed it most, thank you for showing me your heart, thank you for letting me be a part of your amazing community.  You have all made such a difference in my life!  My journey is an unknown for the fall as I still need to devote more time to my family.  I can’t move forward in this journey without looking back and expressing what an absolute blessing each Breton student, parent, and staff member has been on my life.  Keep making a difference with each step you take!  You have made a huge difference in mine.  Thank you.
Mrs. Boersma

No choir this week, Wednesday, June 5.  Have a great summer -- sing loud!

First Lego League

We have good news to share as we approach the June 6 deadline for our fall 2019 Lego Robotics season. Upon reviewing the current signup information, we should have enough students to form a team or teams at each of our elementary buildings. We’ll be reaching out to parents this coming week to identify coaches, mentors, and other volunteers to support these teams. If you have not signed up your student using our First Lego League interest survey, please do so by the end of the day June 6. Please view our FAQ by clicking here...

Incredible!  We're almost there!

Over the last two years, Now&Forever has raised more than $6 million to create a sustainable source of funding for our schools. That includes more than $200,000 in pledges last week alone!

If you're one of the more than 800 families, including more than 130 EGRPS staff members, who have contributed to the campaign, I thank you. More important, our students and our schools thank you as well.

If you haven't yet made a pledge to this historic effort, there's still time. We still need to raise $380,000 in the community portion of the campaign. With your help, we'll get there. To make your pledge, visit the Now&Forever donation page on the Foundation’s website.

Thank you, as always, for your support!

Volunteers Needed

The PTO board is currently looking for volunteers to lead the following committees next year:

Gardening Committee:  Round up a group of volunteers to help clean up the flower beds!  The gardening committee can meet anytime in early August to make the front of the building look fantastic!  Spring clean up is as needed. This year is our year to need to worry about ordering or delivery the PTO will do all that.  Just show up to help spread!

Staff Appreciation Treats:  Our staff does so much for our Bulldogs throughout the year that we want to continuously show our appreciation!  Help us put together a team who will bring treats to the staff lounge once a month and stock the fridge with their favorite drinks.  One committee chair needed to set up a sign up genius for monthly volunteers.

Variety Show:  Leaders needed to help put together and facilitate a avaning of talent.  This event typically takes place in mid-November. The team would coordinate acts, collect and review music and help students practice and move on and off stage.  Event takes place in the evening at the Breton gym.

If you are interested in any of these committees and would like to help lead these groups, please contact Magda VanWingen at
