Principal's Message

Dear Lakeside Elementary Families,

Last week we were fortunate to have some great weather for the start of the Lakeside Running Club. Beginning last week through May 19th, each Tuesday and Thursday at last recess students run on a designated track on school property to enjoy time together promoting physical fitness as a school community. Students also earn small prizes for each mile they run. Thank you to the many parent volunteers and to Mrs. Bailey for helping to organize this fun student activity. Please enjoy the photos below of last week’s running.

Spring Concert

Spring is in the air and the EGRPS Elementary Music teachers, Mrs. Kline and Mrs. Pugia, have been working with students to prepare a performance that showcases their learning throughout the school year. We look forward to welcoming families to this event on Monday, May 16 at 2:00 p.m. in the Lakeside Elementary gymnasium.

Gardening Club- Adopt a Planter

This year as part of the Gardening Club, the PTO will be introducing Adopt a Planter. You can volunteer to care for a planter at one of the entrance locations of the school. Responsibilities include planting and maintaining the planters from spring planting season, through the summer and into fall of next school year. There are also other opportunities to get involved with the Gardening Club, please sign up on the link here for the planter program or to find out more about the group! A fun activity the Gardening Club led in the fall was a bulb planting fundraiser to earn money for mulch for the new plantings. If you happen by the front of the school now, you will see the daffodils and tulips starting to poke through the snow!

Earth Day Initiative

Five Lakeside third grade students are leading the charge this upcoming Earth Day, Friday, April 22. This group has a passion for sharing ways to help support our earth and will be leading a recess trash pick up on Friday. Additionally, we are taking up a collection for Blandford Nature Center. If your child(ren) would like to participate, there is a donation jar in the office. All donations collected this week will be donated to Blandford Nature Center this upcoming weekend.

Smartwatch and Cell Phone Reminder

We understand that Smartwatches and cell phones are an easy way for families to communicate with their children. Please help us to maintain a distraction-free learning environment by reminding your child that any smartwatches and cell phones brought to school must remain off and in their backpack while on school grounds. For more information, please click here to review Board Policy 8320 and 8320-R.

Additional Safety Reminders

Recently there has been an increase in student drop-offs in the middle of Hall Street, which has resulted in a number of close calls. If you are dropping off or picking up students from Lakeside Elementary using the south side of the building, please park your vehicle and have students utilize the crosswalk on Hall Street (pictured below) or the Breton/Hall crosswalks with our crossing guard, Mr. Howard. Thank you for your understanding and your commitment to keeping students safe!

Class Placement for 2022-2023

One of our most important tasks is preparing the class lists for next year.  I will meet with staff later this spring to begin student placements for the 2022-2023 school year.  To guide us in this important process, we will follow the East Grand Rapids Board of Education Policy #8040:

To the extent possible, students are assigned to specific classes, grade levels, and teachers by the building Principal. In making assignments, Principals may consider (with input from teachers and parent(s)/guardian(s) the following factors: (i) individual student needs; (ii) learning styles of students; (iii) teaching styles; (iv) gender ratio; (v) heterogeneous make-up of the class; (vi) class size; and (vii) special education needs.

Your input is valuable. If you wish to contribute information about your child, please fill out the optional Student Placement Information Google Form found here. Please do not request a specific teacher as many factors go into the placement decision and we have yearly changes in teaching assignments. This form needs to be completed by Friday, April 29, 2022.

The M-STEP state assessment for third through fifth grade students begins after Spring Break based on windows of time determined by the state. Our M-STEP testing schedule is linked here. Please try to schedule appointments around these dates and times to prevent your child(ren) from missing class time to complete make-up test sessions.
