Is your landscape ready for our dry warm weather?

Sonoran Gardens and The Contained GardenerIf your plants are looking frail, check your irrigation controller. Did you re-program it off a winter cycle? With longer, warmer days even our drought resistant landscapes need more water. If you are uncertain how to reprogram your controller call our Sonoran Gardens' Service Technician and he can set it up for the warm seasons ahead, give you “clock school”, or set you up for quarterly visits so you never have to worry about seasonal adjustments and cleanings again! While he's at your home, you might want to consider an inspection of your irrigation to insure that there are no leaks or clogged emitters that will keep your plants from getting the necessary amount of water they need to stay health and vibrant.

Have you ever considered creating a Butterfly or Hummingbird garden:

  • Choose a spot in your yard that has some sun, but is also protected from wind. Butterflies love warm weather, but will avoid stopping to rest in windy areas.
  • Include one or two flat rocks that butterflies can use for sunning during cool mornings.
  • Consider including a shallow bird bath basin where butterflies can land safely and get a drink.
  • Plants with colorful (yellow orange, red, and pink), nectar dominate plants such as: Sonoran Gardens and The Contained Gardener
    • Penstemon
    • Butterfly Bush
    • Trumpet Vine
    • Fairy Duster
    • Salvia
    • Honeysuckle
    • Chuparosa
    • Lantana
    • Black Foot Daisy
    • Black Dalea
  • Avoid using pesticides or herbicides; they will harm butterflies and hummingbirds
  • Adding hummingbird feeders full of sugar water will attract hummingbirds to your garden. The feeder may also attract ants and insects which will attract more birds. This is a fantastic addition to bring a variety of species to your garden. We have even seen cactus wrens roosting atop a hummingbird feeder trying to get a sip!
