April Newsletter

It is with a very heavy heart that we bring sad news. Schneider Dorcela, a life long friend passed away on April 1st at 5:00 am. from complications with Sickle Cell Anemia. He was not feeling well this last week and on Saturday night he asked to be taken to the hospital and passed away from respiratory distress. Schneider had finally received his medical degree in Haiti and was a full fledged doctor. He was preparing to begin his residency in Connecticut. Please pray for his parents and eight siblings. Schneider loved the Lord and wanted to make a difference in his country. If you would like to donate to help the family with funeral expenses, please contact Nancy Turner at 843-368-0870 or by email: nan@loveandgracehaiti.com

Introducing Our Board Members

With a new board of directors on staff at Love and Grace, we feel that it is important for you all to get to know each and every one of us. This month, we would like to highlight Robin Holmes, who has graciously taken over our chairman of the board  position. Robin first went to Haiti in June of 2015. Her love and compassion for the boys and its people was instant. She has been part of our mission trips ever since. Robin is a woman of faith, and known as a prayer warrior.  Robin and her husband, Paul, have been married for 32 years and are the proud parents of four children. After the children were grown, she worked for 11 years at Step of Faith Academy. She is now on the mission's board of Grace Community Church, volunteer youth leader, involved in women's bible studies, and a cancer survivor!!

Report Cards Are In

We just received some of the report cards for the boys. You will be notified  personally if you sponsor a boy, but we want to recognize our three highest students who worked hard in school, did their homework, and studied for their exams. Congratulations to these boys!

(Left to right: Yvens who scored a 8.36/10, Melchisedek who scored a 7.97/10, Jameson who scored a 7.50/10)

Urgent Prayer Request

There is concern that with all the violence in the last few weeks, The gangs are moving closer to our area. We haven't been there a year yet and we love the home, but the boy's safety may be at risk. Please be in prayer for wisdom and guidance as to what future steps we may have to take.  Some of staff are not able to travel back and forth from work and have to stay at the home. The area where Madame Altema lives (Croix-de-Bouquet) is very bad and she is not able to travel to work some days.

A few weeks ago, the driver at the boys' home, Eddy, was involved in a motorcycle accident. His foot was badly injured in the accident and he recently had to receive surgery in order to repair it. He also lost one of his toes. When one of our staff members has a medical emergency, Love and Grace always does everything that we can do to financially support them. Please continue to keep Eddy in prayer as he goes through his recovery. If you would like to help financially with the hospital and medical cost contact Nancy Turner by email:  Nan@loveandgracehaiti.com

Meet Elyoud

Elyoud came to the boy's home in January 2020. One of our Haitian board members asked if I would help this family. When I met with the mother she arrived with a married couple. I recognized the man immediately. He was sponsored many years ago under Partners With Haiti and the Bethany Project (the ministry I worked with for over  15 years). His daughter had a severe cleft palate and I brought her to a hospital built by Paul Farmer (Partners In Health in Cange, which is located in the northern part of Haiti. I hadn't seen him in years so when I was introduced to Elyoud and his mother I didn't hesitate taking this little boy. Elyoud is full of energy and can talk your ear off about anything and nothing. He is always smiling, laughing, dancing, and just plain clowning around. He is one of our most huggable boys! He is in the 1st grade and just received his report card. He scored 7.78 out of 10 which is excellent.

Latest Update on Haiti

On Thursday, April 21st, a meeting was held between 27 teams of international partners and foreign governments to discuss the future steps needed to help restore Haiti. The biggest concern and goal determined during the meeting was the need for elections and a restoration of democracy. There is also a plan to have SWAT and anti-gang units operational by mid-summer. While the involvement and assistance from Haiti's foreign allies is important, it is the hope of these allies that the leaders of Haiti's government come together to form and be apart of these solutions as well. However, criminal violence in Haiti has worsened this past week. Haiti's civil protection agency said the fighting began Sunday (4-24) in four neighborhoods in  Port-au-Prince, north of the international airport. The eruption comes amid a spike in violence and kidnappings as gangs grow more powerful and seek to control more territory. This is a result of the assassination of president Jovenel Moisé. The situation has angered and frustrated Haitians, who are demanding action from interim Prime Minister Ariel Henry's administration, which is receiving international help to boost an underfunded and understaffed police force. This recent violence is blamed on a fight between Chen Mechan gang and the rival 400 Mawozo gang.

Did You Know!

Haiti is one of the most colorful countries in the world! Art, such as paintings and iron art, line the streets of Haiti. As you drive through the cities around curving roads, you can see the rainbow houses climbing up the surrounding mountains. In addition, Haitian taxies, also known as tap-taps, are some of the most beautifully painted art pieces throughout the country! These vehicles are hard to miss, as I am sure you can imagine from these pictures below!
