Happy Earth Day! This 49th anniversary of Earth Day comes at a time when recognition of the need for historic action to address climate change seems to be building every day. With versions of Green New Deals under discussion at the Federal, state, and local levels, and community interest swelling, it's a great time to read this "Energy and Equity" piece, which reminds us how crucial it is to join efforts to protect the environment with efforts to eliminate poverty and racism.
Ithaca Sustainability Newsletter Release Date Changes
To make sure you have the most timely sustainability news and events coming to your inbox, we have coordinated our newsletter release schedule with that of Get Your GreenBack Tompkins (Subscribe to GYGBT here). The Ithaca Sustainability newsletter will now be published the third week of each month, and GYGBT will publish in the first week.

New York City Passes Climate Mobilization Act
The nation’s largest and most economically influential city passed a historic bill Thursday capping climate-changing pollution from big buildings and mandating unprecedented cuts to greenhouse gases. Learn more.

Backup Ride Home Program Helps You Commute Without a Car
The Backup Ride Home program provides peace of mind for commuters who travel to work without a personal vehicle. Free transportation home is arranged if some-thing happens that makes your original travel plan unfeasible. Learn more.
Be Sure To Recycle Right 
Tompkins County Recycling and Materials Management reminds residents that it’s important to recycle correctly. Only recycle plastic containers if they are labeled #1, 2 or 5, and don’t try to recycle any items that don’t belong (aka “wishcycling”). Common UNACCEPTABLE items include paper coffee cups, plastic bags, padded envelopes, and dirty food containers. Not sure if an item is accepted? use the “What Do I Do With..." tool at
