A Message from a2ru's Interim Executive Director

Greetings! The Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru) has been quite busy, and we're excited to share a number of updates with you. In this e-Newsletter you will find information regarding the upcoming a2ru Emerging Creatives Student Conference at Stanford University, our new website, and updates on other developments and events. We look forward to continuing to serve our Partner Institutions by unifying and defining the mechanisms for arts-integrative interdisciplinary research, curricula and creative practice in all of their varied manifestations - whether pushing their boundaries up against other disciplines, putting the power of creative cognition into practice, or creating entirely new modes of knowing and creating.
a2ru Emerging Creatives Student Conference
a2ru's inaugural student conference, hosted by Stanford University, is just around the corner and there is still limited space available for your students. The Emerging Creatives Student Conference is specifically designed to be skills and networking intensive, and is meant for undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines - particularly those from technological and artistic fields. The centerpiece of the conference is a design thinking "bootcamp" experience for students from a2ru partner institutions, provided by Stanford's prestigious Hasso Plattner Institute of Design. Attendees will also have the opportunity hear from experts, including:

Leila Kinney: Executive Director for Arts Initiatives at MIT
Bill Sherman: Founding Director of OpenGrounds and Associate Vice President for Research at the University of Virginia
Tirin Moore: Neurobiologist and Bio-X faculty member at Stanford University
Bruce Lindsey: Dean for the College of Architecture / Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Design at Washington University in St. Louis
Butler Looney: Lead Designer at Turner Duckworth in San Francisco
Ivica Ico Bukvic: Composer and Intermedia Sculptor at Virginia Tech, and more

The Emerging Creatives student conference will be held at Stanford University from January 30 to February 1 2014 and is limited to students at a2ru Partner Institutions. Best of all, with the generous support of the Stanford Arts Institute a2ru is able to offer students FREE registration. If you are Faculty or an Administrator at a Partner Institution and intend to join us for this student conference, please email to RSVP. We would love to see you there! For more details and how to participate click here.

Edge Effects
: The a2ru 2014 Annual National Conference
The 2014 a2ru Annual National Conference will be held at Iowa State University, November 5-8, 2014. The 2014 national conference will be open to those at any and all institutions of higher learning and beyond; we welcome those from industry, funding agencies, non-profits and other sectors. The Edge Effects conference will highlight the amazing arts and arts-integrative interdisciplinary research and curricula faculty conduct at our Partner Institutions as well as provide space and discussion forums for how to administer it, assess its impacts, and optimize organizational and structural support. In addition to panel presentations and breakout sessions, the 2014 a2ru National Conference will also feature a number of creative works from artists at Partner Institutions, manifesting as openings, performances, and readings. We're organizing the conference around on a2ru's models for scholarship and creative practice at the edges:

Infusion:  the arts are inserted into other courses or research as example, demonstration, illustration or experience
Diffusion: research or disciplinary courses in arts practice offered to non-majors or analogous researchers
Fusion: arts practice is integrated with other disciplines at the "cellular" level, where arts and non-arts disciplines are called equally upon and something new emerges

We'd love to see you in Ames, Iowa in November, and we encourage you to start planning your trip now. Stay tuned for more details.
